March 2013 Paranormal TV New and Returning Air Dates

March brings us 3 new series and 3+ returning series, which I think is quite fitting for the third month of the year, and almost all are going crazy with the 3's in there start dates: Vikings (03.03.13), Game of Thrones Season 3 (03.03.13) and both Orphan Black and Doctor Who start on 03.30.13! This month also has us seeing the debut of The Bates Motel, a prequel series to Psycho (anyone who hasn't see Psycho be care of the series description below). Last up, but certainly not least is the highly anticipated return of Grimm and it's been *way* too long since we've had new episodes I can't wait to see a new ep!

I'm very amazed we have such an amazing array of shows to enjoy this month, I don't know about you but my schedule is getting extremely full of awesome TV.

Revolution ~ Season 1 Returns

Game of Thrones ~ Seaseon 3 Premiere
Sunday March 31, 2013 on HBO Canada

Genre: Fantasy

Description: "Based on the bestselling book series by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones is an epic drama set in the grounded fantasy continent of Westeros, where ambitious men and women of both honor and ill-repute live in a land where summers and winters can last years. In Kings Landing, the coveted Iron Throne is occupied by cruel young Joffrey, counseled by his conniving mother Cersei and uncle Tyrion, who has been appointed Hand of the King. But the Lannister hold on the Throne is under assault on many fronts. There's Robb Stark, son of the slain Lord of Winterfell Ned Stark, who seeks autonomy in the north and has taken Cersei's brother Jaime prisoner in battle; Daenerys Targaryen, looking to shore up her depleted power in the east through three newborn dragons; Stannis Baratheon, brother of the late king Robert, who rejects Joffrey's legitimacy and aligns with a powerful priestess to raise a naval attack; Stannis' brother Renly, who has maintained his own claim since fleeing Kings Landing; and Theon Greyjoy, who was raised by the Starks, but whose blood ties in his native Iron Islands runs deep. In the meantime, a new leader is rising among the wildings outside the Wall, adding new perils for Jon Snow and the order of the Night's Watch. With tensions and treaties, animosity and alliances, Season 2 of Game of Thrones promises to be a thrilling journey through a riveting, unforgettable fictional landscape."

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Stranded Series Premiere

Image: Stranded - Premieres Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 10 p.m. ET

It's always exciting to see a new non-fiction paranormal series in the works and this week we get to see one come to life! Stranded follows paranormal enthusiasts who stay in haunted locations for a week, recording the event which becomes each episode. It will be really cool to see all the locations and get to know the all the new participates. I can't wait! Stranded was a shoe in for this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week:

Stranded - Series Premiere
Wednesday February 27, 2013 at 10pm ET on Space

Here is a description of Stranded: "In the experimental reality series STRANDED, each episode features the self-recorded footage of a diverse group of people in teams of three, as they’re left for a week at a haunted location. The participants facing the spine-chilling experiences include newlyweds and a brother-in-law, as well as a trio of roommates. Using hand-held cameras combined with footage from security cameras, STRANDED provides viewers with an unscripted firsthand account of each group’s stay as they cope with increasingly pervasive feelings of fear and desolation. Some of the locations visited during the six-episode series include Revelstoke, B.C.’s Three Valley Chateau, Star Island in New Hampshire, and the West Virginia Penitentiary."

Also Awesome:
  • Robot Combat League (Series Premiere) Tuesday February 26, 2013 at 10pm ET on Space, here are some details on the show: "In ROBOT COMBAT LEAGUE, 12 teams, each consisting of a fighter or “robo-jockey,” and a robotics engineer or “robo-tech”, fight it out in a first-of-its kind competition. The competitors are from a variety of backgrounds including a race car driver, an Olympic athlete, a National Guard helicopter pilot, and a mix of professional fighters and software engineers. Each team is paired with its own robot, and with the help of a high-tech exo-suit, their movements are translated to their robot. A pioneer in cutting-edge creature effects, animatronics, and control technology, robotics expert Mark Setrakian is responsible for designing and creating the robots, and has contributed to films including Men In Black and Hellboy. Providing viewers with play-by-play commentary of all the robotic action is series host Jericho."
  • Vikings ~ Series Premiere this Sunday March 3, 2013 on History. I'm really excited for this historical/action series which although I'm not sure if there is any paranormal connect, it still looks freaking awesome. See more about Vikings at History.ca and History.com

Paranomrally-Inclined 2013-14 TV Pilots ~ Specialty Channels

Hear Suzie and Shannon discuss the specialty channel possible paranormal pilots for 2013-14 on Episode 132 of Hexed: Sisterhood of the Supernatural here.

As promised, here is a look at the paranormally-inclined 2013-14 TV Pilots for US Specialty channels that fall under the Hexed umbrella of Paranormal, Science Fiction and Horror, and in there we have a few post-apocalyptic, vampire and even a zombie show.

Due to the fact that there are SO MANY SHOWS, I've split the titles into 2 posts, with this list being the specialty channels which have a lesser chance of making it to our TV screens up here in Canada (but we still want to see them and hope that changes!). For the big 5 US networks (The CW, Fox, NBC, CBS and ABC), see this post here.

And now onto to specialty channel paranormally-inclined titles!

Paranormal
Or at least hopefully/possibly paranormally-inclined

Occult
Description: "An FBI agent returns from administrative leave after going off the deep end while investigating his wife’s disappearance. Eager to be back on the job, he is paired with an agent with her own complicated backstory who specializes in the occult. Together, they will solve cases for the newly formed occult crimes task force."
Genre: Paranormal/Mystery
Channel: A&E

Shannon's Take: I'm stoked for this one, it sounds really cool and even though I'm not a fan of procedural shows but the occult angle has be there.

The Leftovers
Description: "The story of the people who didn’t make the cut after the Rapture happens, and a world that will never be the same."
Genre: Paranormal/Post-Apocalyptic/Religious
Channel: HBO

Shannon's Take: So.... I'm divided on this one because by default it feels religious. Then again, I don't know much about The Rapture so maybe those who 'didn't make it' could be very interesting folks. Need to hear more on this one.

The Strain
Description: "Eph Goodweather, who investigates biological threats for the CDC, teams with ex-professor and Holocaust survivor Abraham Setrakian and they assemble a ragtag group that represents mankind’s only hope when a swarm of vampires quickly turn civilization into a buffet spread. Based on the novel trilogy."
Genre: Paranormal/Vampires/Horror
Source: Based on novel trilogy
Channel: FX

Shannon's Take: So, swarm of vampires = yes. Ragtag group = yes. That's 2 yeses, and that's enough for me!

Supanatural (Animated)
Description: "Two outspoken divas are humanity’s last line of defense against the supernatural, when they’re not working at the mall."
Genre: Animated/Comedy/Supernatural
Channel: Amazon Studios

Shannon's Take: Wow. This is a bit of a wildcard, I don't usually watch animation but the premise is intriguing enough to stretch into that territory.

Science Fiction

Horizon
Description: "Set during the height of World War II, a secretary at the FBI discovers that her husband might have been killed in a battle with a spaceship in the South Pacific. Obsessed with learning the truth, she becomes the only person standing between Earth and an alien invasion."
Genre: SciFi/Historical/Alternate History
Channel: USA

Shannon's Take: The fact that this could be alternate history is the element I find to be the most interesting, along with the aliens of course. Definitely curious to hear more about this one.

The Last Sleep
Description: "Centers on the crew of a naval destroyer who, after a global catastrophe decimates the Earth’s population, are forced to confront the reality of their new existence in a world where they are among the only survivors. Based on the novel by William Brinkley."
Genre: Post Apocalyptic
Source: Based on a novel
Channel: TNT

Shannon's Take: I'm a sucker for any kind of people-stranded-somewhere and for a handful of folks to be the survivors of the world? Yep, I want to see it. I just wish it wasn't TNT because that is the channel that we seem to be least likely to get the shows, or we get they WAY late. Fingers crossed if this one happens it finds a happy home on a Canadian channel.

Dark Minion
Description: "Two slackers are just trying to make a paycheck working an intergalactic warship."
Genre: Animated/SciFi/Comedy
Channel: Amazon Studios

Shannon's Take: Another animated series, which makes it an unlikely watch for me but I love the idea.

Horror

Penny Dreadful
Description: "Some of horror literature’s most famous characters — including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and Dracula — become embroiled in Victorian London." This one is straight-to-series.
Genre: Horror/Historical
Channel: Showtime

Shannon's Take: It will see who will reign supreme between Penny Dreadful and Gothica (ABC), which has a similar premise but is current day set. I'll be watching these two closely.

Zombieland
Description: "A continuation of the adventures of Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita and her younger sister Little Rock — four humans who band together to survive the zombie apocalypse. Based on the 2009 feature film."
Cast includes: Kirk Ward, Tyler Ross and Izabela Vidovic
Genre: Horror/Zombie
Channel: Amazon Studios

Shannon's Take: I know this is definitely a favourite film for many and I'm not surprized that they are going for this one, but I wonder if it's a little late to the game for zombie ness, and if there is room alongside the powerhouse of The Walking Dead. Tonally, the two are completely different, but it's still quite a specialty genre. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

Looking for details on ALL the 2013-14 TV Pilots? Check out Deadline's awesome post which includes all the specialty channels, plus run downs of the Big 5 over at The Hollywood Reporter, TV Line and Deadline.

Paranormally-Inclined 2013-14 TV Pilots ~ The Big 5 US Networks

Hear Suzie and Shannon discuss these shows on Episode 131 of Hexed: Sisterhood of the Supernatural.

It's February which means it's the time to pour over listings of possible pilots for next years fall seasons. It's amazing to see the trends of sereis over time, as well as what shows make it from pilot to the actual fall schedule (see our post on last years lists), or winter - shows like Cult and Zero Hour just premiere in the past few weeks.

This time around we have a fair amount of dystopic and post-apocalyptic, and a few more romantic series too along with some heavy hitters like S.H.I.E.L.D and the Vampire Diaries spin off. Not too much fantasy this year, which is also interesting. Here's a look at the shows that fall under the Hexed umbrella of Paranormal, Fantasy, SciFi, Superhero and ...well... a few extra ones that we might like just for fun.

Due to the fact that there are SO MANY SHOWS, I'm going to split this into 2 posts, with this list being from the big 5 US networks of The CW, Fox, NBC, CBS and ABC. The specialty channel shows I'll put separately (see here), only because the chance of us specialty-programming isn't as likely up here in Canada are less than the Big 5.

Without further adieu...

Paranormal
Or at least hopefully/possibly paranormally-inclined

The Sixth Gun
Description: "Based on the best-selling Oni Press graphic novel, this supernatural Western follows the story of six mythical guns, each with its own other-worldly powers."
Description: "Based on the graphic novel of the same name, the supernatural western examines six mythical guns that each have their own otherworldly powers"
Genre: Paranormal/Western
Source: Based on graphic novel
Channel: NBC

Shannon's take: This one sounds awesome, it's not often you see supernatural/western as a mash-up and the few times I have see it be done it's been amazing. I'm got my eye on this one!

The Tomorrow People
Description: "Based on the U.K. series created by Roger Price, the drama tells the story of several young people from around the world who represent the next stage in human evolution, possessing special powers, including the ability to teleport and communicate with each other telepathically. Together they work to defeat the forces of evil."
Description: "In the vein of X-Men and Heroes, it’s the story of several young people from around the world who represent the next stage in human evolution, possessing special powers, including the ability to teleport and communicate with each other telepathically. Together they work to defeat the forces of evil. Based upon the original UK series created by Roger Price."
Description: "Adapted from the 1970s UK series, it follows several young people from around the world who represent the next stage in human evolution, all possessing special powers including the ability to teleport and communicate with each other telepathically. Together they work to defeat the forces of evil."
Cast includes Robbie Amell, Mark Pellegrino and Peyton List
Genre: Paranormal/Science Fiction
Source: Based on the 70's UK Series
Channel: The CW

Shannon's take: I'm always going to be interested shows that explore people with special powers like telepathy and teleportation so this hits high on my curiousity list. The only thing that holds back over-the-moon enthusiasm is it sounds a lot like Alphas which aired the past 2 summers and then was cancelled. But, that means there is room on the TV map for it too. Yes, I am a glass-half-full person!

Sleepy Hollow
Description: "A modern-day supernatural thriller based on the legend of Sleepy Hollow."
Description: "Described as a modern–day supernatural thriller based on The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, it follows Ichabod Crane as he partners with Sleepy Hollow’s local female sheriff to solve the mysteries of a town ravaged by the battle between good and evil."
Description: "A modern-day supernatural thriller based on the legend of the titular Westchester Country, N.Y. town."
Cast includes Orlando Jones, Nicole Beharie and Katia Winter.
Genre: Paranormal/Horror
Source: Based on The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
Channel: Fox

Shannon's take: Oddly, I think I would be MORE interested in this one if it was historically set given last years take-out-of-period show Elementary, but it will all be about who/what is the determination of good and evil. If it's supernaturally-inclined then I'm in. If it's more horror and procedural, than not likely for me.

Gothica
Description: "A sexy gothic soap set in the present day that weaves together a mythology that incorporates the legends of Dracula, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dorian Gray, among others."
Casting includes: Chris Egan (Dorian Gray), Tom Ellis (Victor Frankenstein)
Genre: Paranormal/Soap Opera/Drama
Channel: ABC

Shannon's take: Wow. This is ambitious, and I think the success will all be depending on the tone. I love the exploration of classic horror stories, I hope they go beyond the surface of the easy-to-pick-out the different characters and legends, but then again it *is* a soap. Wait, if it's a soap there needs to be romance... hmmm. I'm intrigued. Very intrigued. This one is gutsy, so I'm cheering for it to succeed.

The Originals
Description: "The series enters on the Original family of vampires, as Klaus returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans — a town he helped build centuries ago — and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel."
Kinda spoiler-y Description: "This planted pilot, airing as an April episode of The Vampire Diaries, Klaus returns to the French Quarter of New Orleans, a supernatural melting pot that he helped build centuries ago, and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel"
A VERY SPOILERY Description: "A spinoff of the CW's The Vampire Diaries revolving around the Original family in New Orleans. In the episode, Klaus returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans, a town he helped build centuries ago, and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel (Charles Michael Davis). Elijah, intent on helping his self-destructive brother find redemption, must side with Marcel's enemies in order to keep Klaus in line."
Genre: Paranormal/Vampire/Historical
Source: Based on The Vampire Diaries TV Series
Channel: The CW

Shannon's take: I have mixed feelings about this Vampire Diaries spin-off. In one way, I admire that The CW is catering to their audience and creating a show just for them, but on the other hand there is something about it that bugs me. Also the notion of it leads to huge potential spoilers around The Vampire Diaries this season, which are getting to be near-impossible to avoid.

The Returned
Description: "What happens when the people you have mourned and buried suddenly appear on your doorstep as if not a day's gone by? The lives of the people of Arcadia are forever changed when their deceased loved ones return. Based on a novel by Jason Mott."
Description: "The potential series asks the provocative question, “What happens when the people you have mourned and buried suddenly appear on your doorstep as if not a day’s gone by? The lives of the people of Aurora are forever changed when their deceased loved ones return.”"
Genre: Paranormal/Drama/Possibly Horror
Source: Based on a novel
Channel: ABC

Shannon's take: I think this one will likely not be a show for me, as I have a feeling it will be a faith-exploration. It's too early to say, it depends if it skews horror direction vs message-y vs something else entirely. We'll have to wait and see!

Believe
Description: "An unlikely relationship develops between a young girl named Bo with a gift and a man named Tate (Jake McLaughlin) sprung from prison who has been tasked with protecting her from the evil elements that hunt her power."
Genre: Little hard to tell, looks like Paranormal OR SciFi
Channel: NBC

Shannon's take: This is another one that it's hard to even tell the genre of it, and I'm guessing it's paranormal or scifi if it has a 'young girl with a gift'. Man, did they HAVE to call her Bo? Don't they watch Lost Girl? Anyway, I'll be curious to hear more, because there isn't enough to go on. How 'young' is the girl? Teen? Younger? Who is the audience? What's her power? And what/who is the 'evil elements'? Are they human? Lots of questions on this one.

Second Sight
Description: "Based on the U.K. by series of the same name by Paula Milne, thegothic psychological thriller revolves around a detective who is suddenly afflicted with an autoimmune virus that causes hallucinations reflective of his subconscious. He discovers that catching the killer depends as much on insight as eyesight."
Description: "A gothic psychological thriller about a detective who is suddenly afflicted with an autoimmune virus that causes hallucinations reflective of his subconscious. He discovers that catching the killer depends as much on insight as eyesight. Based on UK series."
Description: "Based on the British crime drama, the gothic psychological thriller follows a detective who is suddenly afflicted with an autoimmune virus that causes him to hallucinate about subjects in his subconscious. He soon learns that catching killers depends as much on insight as eyesight."
Cast includes: Jason Lee and Kim Dickens
Genre: Paranormal/Procedural/Mystery
Source: Based on UK Series
Channel: CBS

Shannon's take: I'm not a procedural fan, so this one won't likely be for me. Good casting though, and promising premise and starting point.

Fantasy

Wonderland
Description: "The modern-set follow-up to Lewis Carroll's Alice revolves around Clara, whose life took an unexplained turn for the worse seven years ago. A mysterious stranger tells her there may be an explanation after all ... that lies in the fantastical world of Wonderland."
Description: "Set in the world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland, Wonderland is set in modern times and centers on Alice and a new character, Clara. Seven years ago, Clara’s life took an unexplained turn for the worse, and a mysterious stranger tells her there may be an explanation after all… an explanation that lies in the fantastical world of Wonderland. To revive her dreams and get her life back on track, Clara must wage war against Wonderland’s reigning Queen, the woman we once knew as Alice."
Genre: Fantasy
Source: Modern retelling of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Channel: NBC

Shannon's take: Interesting premise, and I like the world of Alice in Wonderland so I'm curious about this one. It's also interesting to note the trending in TV where the protagonist is not who we would normally see as the main character of a story (Merlin is another example). Need to see more! And it's oddly the only fantasy I see, but we have more and more dystopic and post apocalyptic in the mix ahead.

Science Fiction

Oxygen
Description: "Passion and politics threaten the peace and an epic romance ignites between a human girl (Friday Night Lights' Aimee Teegarden) and an alien boy when he and eight others of his kind (The Orion 9) are integrated into a suburban high school ten years after they and hundreds of others landed on Earth and were immediately consigned to an internment camp where they’ve been imprisoned ever since."
Description: "Passion and politics threaten the peace and an epic romance ignites between a human girl and an alien boy when he and eight others of his kind (The Orion 9) are integrated into a suburban high school ten years after they and hundreds of others landed on Earth and were immediately consigned to an internment camp where they’ve been imprisoned ever since."

Cast includes Aimee Teegarden.
Genre: Science Fiction/Romance
Channel: The CW

Shannon's take: Oh.... this so sounds like Alien Nation meets Roswell. Of course that means I'm IN. Can't wait to hear more.

The Hundred
Description: "Ninety-seven years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization, a spaceship housing the lone human survivors sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth to investigate the possibility of re-colonizing the planet. Based on the forthcoming The Hundred book series (initial two-book order), written by Kass Morgan and published by Little, Brown."
Description: "Based on upcoming Alloy books written by Kass Morgan, the project is set 97 years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization. A spaceship housing the lone human survivors sends 100 juvenile delinquents back to Earth to investigate the possibility of re-colonizing the planet."
Cast includes: Henry Ian Cusick
Genre: Science Fiction/Post Apocalyptic
Source: Based on forthcoming book series
Channel: The CW

Shannon's take: When I hear about this one, I keep having to get over the oddity of a show being based on a 'forthcoming series'. That just feels odd, but maybe it will be some of tie in to the show or influenced by, or who knows. Putting that aside, the idea is totally enough to get me interested because I would LOVE to see more science fiction on TV and starting with juvenile delinquents to investigate anything is a wild premise.

Delirium
Description: "Based on best-selling trilogy about a world where love is deemed illegal and is able to be eradicated with a special procedure. With 95 days to go until her scheduled treatment, Lena Holoway does the unthinkable: she falls in love."
Description: "The series is set in a world where love is deemed illegal and is able to be eradicated with a special procedure. With 95 days to go until her scheduled treatment, Lena Holoway does the unthinkable: she falls in love. Based on Lauren Oliver’s book trilogy."
Description: "Based on a bestselling trilogy about a world where love is deemed illegal and is able to be eradicated with a special procedure. But with 95 days to go until her scheduled treatment, lead character Lena Holoway does the unthinkable and falls in love."
Cast includes Emma Roberts, Billy Campbell, Gregg Sulkin and Corey Reynolds.
Genre: Romance/Dystopic/Science Fiction
Source: Based on book trilogy by Lauren Oliver
Channel: Fox

Shannon's take: I'm very curious about this one, and how it will read on the small screen. I'm a fan of dystopic which has been making lots of waves recently, so getting to see a dystopic series will be very cool. I'm not a fan of love being eradicated though, so I hope there is some kind of rebellion against that. I really need to read this book series! Even if just to avoid spoilers about the show!

The Selection
Description: "Set 300 years in the future, the drama is an epic romance centering on a working-class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince's hand to become the nation's next queen. Balancing her loyalty to family, true love and the kingdom, she must attempt to remain true to herself as she navigates the cutthroat competition and palace intrigue, all while a budding rebellion threatens to topple the crown. Based book by Kiera Cass."
Description: "Getting a pilot order for the second year in a row, the project, based on Kiera Cass’ book series, is an epic romance set 300 years in the future. In it, a poor young woman is chosen by lottery to participate in a competition to become the next queen of a war-torn nation at a crossroads."
Cast includes: Sean Patrick Thomas and Peta Sergeant
Genre: Future-Historical/Science Fiction/Romance
Source: based on the Kiera Cass novel
Channel: The CW

Shannon's take: This one is a carry-over from last year, and honestly I don't really dig the premise at ALL. Feels like being forced into a pageant for getting to be a wife. In the FUTURE. Sigh. A lot will depend on the message/tone that they go with.

Intelligence
Description: "Centers on U.S. Cyber Command, a unit that has been created around one agent with a very special gift: a microchip that has been implanted in his brain that allows him to access the entire electromagnetic spectrum." Cast includes Josh Holloway and Michael Rady.
Genre: Science Fiction/Spy
Channel: CBS

Shannon's take: This sounds interesting, although I have know idea what accessing the entire electromagnetic spectrum would do for someone, and how it affects the character and their surroundings. Is it voluntary? Are they a tool? Are they a super-spy? Etc... So many questions.  The only thing I'm a little gr-rr about it I'll probably confuse people because I talk a lot about the awesome 2006-2007 Canadian series of the same name!

Superhero

S.H.I.E.L.D.
Description: "Based on Marvel Comics' secret intelligence organization that has appeared in countless titles including Iron Man, Captain America and The Ultimates since being introduced in the 1960s. The military law-enforcement agency's moniker stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate, which also has evolved over time in the comics."
Description: "Based on a peacekeeping group found in both the Marvel comic book and feature film universes, including the 2012 movie The Avengers"
Description: "The adventures of the agents of a covert, quasi-military peace-keeping organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. (or the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division), which was featured in last summer’s Avengers movie."
Cast includes Ming-Na, Clark Gregg, Brett Dalton, Elizabeth Henstridge, Ian De Caestecker and Chloe Bennet.
Genre: Superhero/Science Fiction
Source: Marvel Comics
Channel: ABC

Shannon's take: It's a Joss Whedon and Superheroes. Of course this is a YES.

Not Paranormal/SciFi/Fantasy
But could be close enough, and is interest-piquing

Influence
Description: "Provocative workplace ensemble centered on the complicated relationship between two brothers (Steve Zahn) who head a unique agency designed to attack their clients’ problems using the real science of human motivation and manipulation."
Description: "Provocative workplace ensemble centers on relationship between two brothers — a bipolar genius in human psychology and a slick ex-con — who head a unique agency designed to solve their clients’ problems using the real science of human motivation and manipulation. In addition to helping clients, agency staff sometimes use their skills to manipulate each another."
Genre: Drama - although possibly Science-centric or SciFi
Channel: ABC

Shannon's take: I'm going out on a limb including this one, it's possible it could be a straight-up drama with no paranormal or scifi-y stuff at all but even so the premise sounds interesting and kind of reminds me of Lie To Me. The understanding the motivation part is the part that sounds cool, although I'm not interested in manipulation at all.

Blink
Description: "A warm, quirky, humorous drama about a family whose lives are forever changed, for better and worse, when the patriarch has a car crash resulting in a coma-like syndrome where he cannot speak or move, but can see and hear all. His narration and fantasy sequences emanating from his mind provide context and a wry counterpoint to the stories and conflicts of the family and his own situation."
Genre: Comedy/Drama/Possibly Paranormal and/or Fantasy
Channel: The CW

Shannon's take: Another one that I'm going out on a limb to include, but given that it's primarily noted as a comedy it will all be about if you find it funny. My track record with comedies is awful, so chances are it's not a Shannon show.

Girlfriend in a Coma
Description: "After almost two decades, a 34-year-old woman wakes up from a coma to find out she has a 17-year-old daughter from a pregnancy she was unaware of when her life was put on hold. Based on a book by Douglas Coupland." Cast includes Christina Ricci, Miranda Cosgrove and Daniel Stern.
Genre: Comedy/Possibly Paranormal
Source: based on novel by Douglas Copeland
Channel: NBC

Shannon's take: For me Christina Ricci being in the series and the Douglas Copeland connection are the pulls over anything else. And the title reminds me of a song, even though it's super morbid and oddly it's not our only coma-show that's on the slate! Who knew?

Primeval: New World Not Being Renewed by Space

Hot on the heels of the Season 1 finale, the word is out that Primeval: New World is not being renewed by Space, and it's noted that the "audience growth throughout the first season was not as strong as hoped, even after a schedule move in January from Monday to Tuesday nights to provide the benefit of a lead-in from established series Face Off".

I'm trying to remember when changing nights helped ratings, especially when Primeval: New World being moved to Tuesdays paired it with Face Off as opposed to following Being Human (North American). The move also freed up Mondays at 10pm giving The Almighty Johnsons it's same timeslot as last summer.

Right now, I'm still using the term 'not renewed' as opposed to 'cancelled' as according to the Primevel: New World's Facebook Page their "producers are in talks with other international broadcasters and partners", so there is still hope. I've really enjoyed the series and hope to see it continue, and for our US friends remember the word is it will still air in SyFy.

Fingers crossed we will see more dinosaurs in this awesome Vancouver-set show.

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Ghost Mine Finale

Suzie and I have been absolutely adoring Ghost Mine since it's debut 6 weeks ago, and I'm sad to see it already come to it's finally but that's how 6-part series roll! The show has been packed with paranormal intrigue and engaging personal stories of the miners, the investigators and even the residents and history of Sumpter. Here's hoping it will work out well for all!  I hope they strike it big in this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week:

Ghost Mine Finale
Wednesday February 20, 2013 at 10pm ET on Space

Also Awesome:
  • Primeval: New World Season 1 Finale Tues Feb 19, 2013 at 10pm ET on Space.  This Canadian spin off of the British Primeval has been pretty entertaining throughout the first season and I'm very curious to how they will wrap it up. I really hope it will be renewed!  Love seeing dinosaurs on TV.
  • Cult Series Premiere Tues Feb 19, 2013 at 9pm ET on CTV2 and Fri Feb 22, 2013 9pm ET on Space. It's too early to tell if there is any paranormal connection with Cult, but with the cast including Matt Davis (Alaric on Vampire Diaries), Jessica Lucas, Alona Tal (Jo on Supernatural) and Robert Knepper (T-Bag on Prison Break), I absolutely have to check it out and see for myself.

Vikings Comes to History March 3, 2013

I was very excited to see that we are getting the series Vikings here in Canada on History, and wow I'm going to have to FIND The History Channel because I don't ever watch it. But I will now! Who can resist a series on Vikings?

Here's a series description if you want to know more:

"The word “Viking” has been synonymous with brutality, terror and mystery ever since the first Norse warriors appeared along the coasts of England and France at the end of the eighth century. Their notoriety for barbarianism without pity was an important part of the mythology that grew up around them. And while Vikings are still characterized as such in popular culture, the reality is much more complex, visceral and powerful than their reputation suggests.

The extraordinary tales of the lives and epic adventures of these warriors are told in Vikings, a new nine-part scripted series premiering Sunday, March 3 at 10 e/p on HISTORY. The drama portrays the world of these Dark Age raiders, traders, explorers – not from an outsider’s view, but through the eyes of Viking society."

Vikings stars Travis Fimmel, Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment), Clive Standen, Katheryn Winnick, Jessalyn Gilsig and Gustaf Skarsgård and the series premieres on March 3, 2013 at 10pm ET on History (US and Canada).

Stranded Sneak Peek

I'm really excited to see the new series Stranded, and we have some sneak peeks for share that give a stronger sense of the show. Stranded is a non-fiction show that has paranormal enthusiasts who self record footage of an overnight stay at a haunted location. It's created by Destination Truth's Josh Gates and looks like a really interesting addition to the roster of non-fiction paranormal shows.

The SyFy premiere date for Stranded is Feb 27, 2013 so I'm hoping that is when we will see it on Space too, it will be on Space on Wednesday Nights, but we are just waiting confirmation of a start date.

Here is a series description: "Created by Josh Gates (Destination Truth), Stranded is an all-new reality series that documents an unconventional – and terrifying – paranormal and psychological experiment. Each episode features the self-recorded footage of a diverse group of every-day paranormal enthusiasts - from newlyweds and a brother-in-law to a trio of roommates. Each team of three will be stranded at one of the most haunted locations in America and record the entire experience with hand-held cameras creating a suspenseful, completely unscripted first-hand account of each group's stay. Over the course of the confinement, the group will cope with increasingly pervasive feelings of fear and desolation, resulting in an experiment that represents a unique combination of psychology and the paranormal."

Supernatural, Vampire Diaries and Arrow Picked Up by The CW: New Seasons to Begin Fall 2013

It feels super early to hear renewal news, but I'm more than happy to share that The CW has picked up Supernatural, Vampire Diaries and Arrow for additional seasons to Begin Fall 2013.

That's right folks, we'll be seeing Supernatural Season 9, Vampire Diaries Season 5 and Arrow Season 2 come Fall 2013. I'm not surprized about Vampire Diaries or Arrow, but I had concerns about Supernatural given how long the season has gone on but The CW indicate that since it's been paired with Arrow on Wednesday Nights, the Supernatural viewership has increased. Awesome news! Here's the whole skinny from over at The CW Blog:

"The CW Network has given early pickups to three of its hit series for next season, including freshman hit ARROW, its top-rated drama THE VAMPIRE DIARIES and fan favorite SUPERNATURAL, it was announced today by Mark Pedowitz, President, The CW. All three shows will return in Fall 2013.

“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit ARROW and fan favorite SUPERNATURAL on Wednesday night, and the continued success of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that,” said Pedowitz. “Not only do ARROW, SUPERNATURAL, and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season.”

One of the true breakout hits of the season, ARROW posted The CW’s best series premiere since 2009 and currently stands as the network’s most watched show (4.3mil). Heading into its fifth season next fall, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES remains The CW’s highest rated series in target demographics, including adults 18-34 and women 18-34. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES also continues to be one of the network’s top performing shows digitally and socially; in fact, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES recently topped Trendrr’s list as network TV’s #1 social program for the week of January 21–27

The Winchester brothers of SUPERNATURAL will continue to fight the forces of evil for a ninth season. Since being paired with ARROW on Wednesday this year, SUPERNATURAL has seen a dramatic uptick in its ratings from last season, rising 15% among total viewers, 10% in adults 18-34 and 18% in adults 18-49"

My only question now, is how will Beauty and the Beast fair? It's in a paired on Thursdays with The Vampire Diaries and it did win the People's Choice Award for Favourite New TV Drama, so I'm holding out for more good news.

Game of Thrones - Season 1 begins on Showcase this Friday Feb 15, 2013 at 10pm. Although it's neither new nor returning, it's still awesome.  I know I've been meaning to check it out since it began bac in 2011 but I think now I am finally going to get on the train, or would that be horse? And when you are setting those timers, remember this one is a bit longer than the hour so give yourself some breathing room to get all of the crazy goodness. The series stars Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Michelle Fairley, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Iain Glen and Aidan Gillen.

If it's a new-to-you series, here is a Game of Thrones description: "Based on the bestselling fantasy book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. In the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, whoever controls the Iron Throne holds unbelievable power, and the series centers on the rise and fall of several families that covet that power at all costs.

Tatiana Maslany as Sarah in Orphan Black

The date for Orphan Black's debut has finally been announced: March 30, 2013 on Space. We've been keeping tabs on the series since it was first announced in fall 2012 as the fascinating premise and awesome casting made it a perfect selection to chat about there at Hexed. Here are the deets:

"What happens when one day you realize you’re not alone, and there are people out there who look just like you? SPACE announced today that its highly anticipated new Original Series ORPHAN BLACK will premiere Saturday, March 30 at 9 p.m. ET, following the return of SPACE’s #1 series, and fan favourite, DOCTOR WHO at 8 p.m. ET. Produced by Temple Street Productions for SPACE and BBC America, the gripping new 10 episode drama ORPHAN BLACK stars Tatiana Maslany (Cas & Dylan, Picture Day) in the lead role of Sarah, an outsider and orphan whose life changes dramatically after witnessing the suicide of a woman who looks just like her. Sarah assumes the dead woman’s identity, her boyfriend, and her bank account. But instead of solving all her problems, the street smart chameleon is thrust headlong into a kaleidoscopic mystery. Sarah makes the dizzying discovery that she and Beth, the dead woman, are clones…but are they the only ones? Sarah quickly finds herself caught in the middle of a deadly conspiracy, racing to find answers."

Here is even more details, including casting information so spoiler sensitive take note that you may or may not want to read more:

Additional ORPHAN BLACK casting announced today includes Matt Frewer (50/50) as Dr. Aldous Leekie, an academic with an edge and philosopher of the human organism, and Evelyne Brochu (MIRADOR) as Delphine, a student working on her Masters in Molecular and Cellular Biology who becomes intertwined in the mystery.

Beginning life in an English orphanage, Sarah bounced between foster homes until she landed with Mrs. S, who adopted her and Felix, later uprooting them under somewhat suspicious circumstances to North America. Through it all, Sarah has steadfastly remained the English punk – a street-smart stray with a reckless streak and a loyal heart. She’s made bad choices in life, but has always done right by her daughter Kira, even if that meant the pain of separation. Now, all she wants is to reunite with Kira and turn over a new leaf, but her encounter with Beth changes everything, and Sarah finds herself fighting for her life.'

Poll Results: Are You Interested In The Vampire Diaries Spin-Off Series?

Photobucket

You have had your say and the results are in to say if how much Are You Interested In The Vampire Diaries Spin-Off Series? And I'm a little surprized that the leader is a lukewarm maybe at 36%. Even more surprizing those that are interested at the 27% of YES tie those at 27% who don't watch the show. Only a measly 9% of nay sayers so a definitive no. Very interesting.

36% - Maybe
27% - Yes
27% - I Don't Watch Vampire Diaries

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Walking Dead Returns!

I know it's still 6 days away but since it's already felt like the longest hiatus ever, why not start the countdown to the returns of Season 3 of The Walking Dead? I'm psyched to see how they will continue from the crazy mid-season finale back in early December. If it can complete with a chocolate-covered holiday, it was clearly the pick for this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week:

The Walking Dead - Season 3 Returns
Sunday February 10, 2013 on AMC Canada

We occasionally check in on this one on the podcast, but have been pretty actively talking about it through Season 3. If you need to catch up, or want to revisit, Season 3 AMC Canada will be re-airing the first 8 episode of season 3 starting just before 1pm EST (check your local listings for times). See all Hexed podcasts and posts where we’ve discussed The Walking Dead here.

Also Awesome
  • Space is airing tons of fun movies on the weekend including Camel Spiders on Saturday February 9, 2013 at 10:15pm; here's the description: "Soldiers escape a deadly attack but accidently transport several camel spiders with them to the American southwest. An Army Captain (Brian Krause, CASTLE), a small-town Sheriff (C. Thomas Howell, SOUTHLAND), and a desperate group of locals and tourists must survive a frightening infestation of crawling carnage." It's a lot of fun, I was particularly impressed with the how entertaining C. Thomas Howell is in the film.
  • If you like monsters, keep watching Space after Camel Spiders as they are airing three of my favourites: Sharktopus (12:15 AM EST), Mega Piranha (2:10 AM EST) and Mega Python vs. Gatoroid (4:05 AM EST) in the wee hours of Saturday night February 9, 2013. They are all extremely entertaining, I've watched all of them repeatedly because they crack me up so much.  Chatting about them is particular fun and I got to co-host on the Saturday B-Movie Reel over at Tuning into SciFi TV to chat Sharktopus with Kevin Bachelder and Paul Logan of Mega Piranha was noted on a recent episode of Before the Dawn; you can check out 'Shannon's List' in the show notes/slideshow to see why.
