People Choice Awards 2012

Congratulations to Supernatural for 2 wins at this years People's Choice Awards. The show picked up but Favorite Network TV Drama and Favourite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show!

I have to admit we'd likely be happy with any of the Favourite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show as it was in competition with Fringe, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries & The Walking Dead. The competition in the Favorite Network TV Drama included another one of our shows with The Vampire Diaries alongside The Good Wife, Grey's Anatomy and House.

The Vampire Diaries gets a nod as well with Favorite TV Drama Actress going to Nina Dobrev who plays Elena Gilbert.

The Secret Circle Marathon on Space

Want to re-visit the excitement of The Secret Circle Season 1? Or need to catch up on The Secret Circle? Or thinking about hopping on mid-season? You are in luck on all counts! It's great news that Space is running a Secret Circle Marathon on Sunday January 8, 2012 showing episodes 1 through 9 back to back starting at 10am EST.

The show follows the journey of Cassie Blake who returns to Chance Harbour and finds herself dealing with not only all the regular challenges of teen drama and romance, but also being among a set of local witches. It's rare but refreshing to see witches on TV and Suzie & I have really enjoyed The Secret Circle this year. I recently heard that the British TV Show The Fades is coming to DVD and BluRay on February 21, 2012. It's a post apocalyptic show and I don't believe played here in Canada; but I've heard a fair amount about including from the lovely folks at Tuning in to SciFi TV.

The show is described by Wikipedia as "The programme centres on an English teenager named Paul who is haunted by apocalyptic dreams that nobody can explain and is able to see spirits of the dead, known as the Fades, all round him." That sounds pretty freaking amazing to me! Season 1 (or 'Series' 1 if using the British terminology) is 6 episodes long.

Here is more about the show from a synopsis:
"BBC brings to audiences a new supernatural horror series by 2011 RTS Award-winning writer Jack Thorne (the original UK Skins).

Iain De Caestecker (Coronation Street) is Paul, a young man who is haunted by apocalyptic dreams that neither his therapist or best friend, Mac (Daniel Kaluuya, Skins, Sucker Punch), can provide answers for. Worse still, Paul has started seeing the Fades – the spirits of the dead – all around him. They're everywhere but normally can't be seen, heard or touched—until now. An embittered and vengeful Fade has found a way to break the barrier between the dead and the living. and Paul, Mac and their loved ones find themselves in the middle of it all. The Secret Circle: Season 1, Episode 9

Hey all, Shannon here with a new episode run down for The Secret Circle, Episode #9. To refresh your memory these are spoiler filled from the perspective of seeing just the particular episode discussed, and the episodes prior to it. Any predictions will be made from watching this (and previous) episodes, and although I have read the books by L.J. Smith that the show was based on I'm tucking away those thoughts and sticking strictly with what they say and show us in the show. Episode 9 Balcoin

Insight into Cassie's lineage through a family tree left by a shop keeper which has Balcoin noted in her history and the witch hunters want to abduct Cassie to take her to their leaders. Jake flips sides to help Cassie, first trying to get her to leave with them but then recruiting Adam and Circle Folk to rescue her from the witch hunters at the promise of leaving Chance Harbour.

General Comments

• Starting to see character similarities between Jake and Nick, they both have a distanced coldness to them.
• I love how Melissa tells Diana that her cousin isn't a rebound guy although I find it a little odd because I thought Diana mentioned that Adam was really ever the only one
• So not enough Melissa in this on
• Still trying to figure out Jake's loyalties (if any) and what made him now be sympathetic to Cassie as he says it's not her fault (to have dark magic) and that she can fight it
• Wild that Faye can totally read Jake lies and truths

Episode #8: Beneath

With the Elders of Jane & Henry not around it's road trip to Faye's grandfather's house with most of the circle gang in tow. Bad weather leads to indoor games and drama but as the tension heats up we also have Faye 'seeing' herself as a young girl, leading Cassie to find the body of Henry's in the lake.

General Comments

• I loved the spooky elements of this episode including the Faye's visions
  
• It was really weird having an episode without Melissa in it
• I'm horrified at the idea of Jane being controlled by Charles!
  
• Jake really plays the hard-to-ready game well, still have no ideas where his loyalties lie

Halloween episode and it's party time at Cassie's will grandmother Jane is away, lots of abduction and lore reveals galore from how to kill a witch and Cassie's unique powers.

General Comments

• Loved the Halloween theme
• Hated all the abduction-ness, pretty sad that three girls can get chloraphormed at a party and no one does much about it
• Pretty crazy that some of the most powerful witch craft we see is from the witch hunter in the group!
• Not totally loving the 'dark magic' idea, but very curious to hear more about Cassie's family history

The Secret Circle: Season 1, Episode 6

Hey all, Shannon here with a new episode run down for The Secret Circle, Episode #6. To refresh your memory these are spoiler filled from the perspective of seeing just the particular episode discussed, and the episodes prior to it. Any predictions will be made from watching this (and previous) episodes, and although I have read the books by L.J. Smith that the show was based on I'm tucking away those thoughts and sticking strictly with what they say and show us in the show. Episodes 1-8 are being done retrospectively of the mid-season break, therefore no predictions will be made.

Episode #6: Wake
The Circle and the town mourn the passing of Nick. And wait - new character alert! Nick's brother Jake returns to Chance Harbour for Nick's wake, and it's clear that the original circle-teens are not very happy to see him as he was quite a troublemaker and left on bad terms. It's revealed that not only is Jake a witch, but he also is running with a band witch-hunters.

General Comments

• New characters! More Family! Witch Hunters! Bad anti-witch witches! Knife fights! Omg, the only thing this episode didn't have was a pinata.
• Brutal scene between Ethan and Diana where her tells her it's too bad she's in love with his son when he's destined for another - Ethan was so matter of fact it was unnerving and you could tell it really shook Diana
• I loved how Cassie took her Jane's words on being a leader to heart as she tried to re-form the circle with Jake, and the fact that she gives him a chance even though everyone pretty much hates hime

• Nick’s wake is held at The Boathouse

New Characters

• Jake Armstrong – Nick’s older brother, Cassie sees him burning something outside and then a burned crescent moon appears, Jane says he was a troubled kid, Adam hates him because he stole from Ethan. Also a witch. And a witch hunter. Loyalties definitely unclear.
  
• Simone - A witch hunter and 'true believer' who attacks Cassie with a crescent moon knife and wants her blood.
• Witch Hunters: Appear to be lead by guy played by JR Bourne (Teen Wolf, Stargate SGI), and there are several of them but so far no names beyond Jake and Simone have been revealed.
  

Character Development

• Diana didn’t initially remember Nick and being with her as kids and/or that they were friends
• Inference that Nick Aunt was who he stayed with
  
• Can tell that Nick’s death is wearing on Charles

Episode #5: Slither
Melissa is inhabitated by a serpent demon-thing and tricks Nick into helping her dig up what he thinks is her family's book, and then tricks Faye to help open the books which is actually a box of demons! Cassie pulls a Baby and runs to get her Grandmother for help, and in the fight Melissa is save but the demon hops into Nick who escapes and approaches Dawn as Abaddon, someone known to her from the time of her circle. When push comes to shove, Dawn gets Charles to kill the demon by drowning Nick, leaving him to be the first casualty of the Circle.

General Comments

• I loved the strong female family relationships that shone in this episode, how Cassie decided that lying doesn't work for her and she reached out to Jane and Jane in turn saved the day
• I loved that they did a ritual on the Blood Moon and how the Blood Moon looked - gorgeous!
  
• It's becoming more clear that Dawn is using Charles as a tool, to get the job done - although they appear to have similar motivations it's not clear to me what they are and how they are different; but now they are feeling different. It is noted they are looking for 6 crystals to restore the power from their circle which is interesting because the teen circle doesn't have crystals; at least not yet
• Big kudos to actor Jessica Parker Kennedy who plays Melissa here, fun times playing a possessed girl but also she did a great job of pretty much seducing Faye into helping her after she had wrangled in Nick. That was very impressive.
• I'm really shocked they killed off Nick, I mean - he's part of the circle! I didn't expect any of them to get killed, so gloves seem pretty much off now!
  

Locations/Social Events

• Blood Moon - Not a social event per se, but it's the first natural occurrence they refer to for spells
  

New Characters

• Abaddon - the name said by Nick while possessed by the demon
  

Character Development

• Melissa wakes up with massive headache and the slippy demon-y thing is in her, she brushes off Nick and she was possessed for most of the shows, says everything was blurry
• Jane is a casting queen! Spell-or-rama! Saves the day with crystal witchy goodness
  
• Nick – killed by Charles while possessed – The rest of the circle doesn’t know what really happened
• Charles is quite affected by the fact that he killed Nick, that it should never feel right , Dawn comforts him by saying he saved her life.
  

Relationships

• Jane Reaches out to Cassie about what happened with Heather Barnes, says that it’s makes sense that she’d find Faye and Diana that their parents were all friends. Says that there is nothing that she can’t talk to her about. But Diana tells Cassie can’t tell anything . She also says that if she had known, she could have helped and that she should have seen the signs
• Melissa lures in Nick to help her did up what he says is the book of shadows just for them; then proceeds to also lures in Faye
• Diana / Adam actually spend some romantic time together
• Diana reveals to Faye that their parents are dating (although they aren't - it's a cover!)
  

Witch Actions & Lore - Teens

• Melissa is twitch city with the demon inside her, but when Nick is around she calms out and tricks him into digging up something in forest about finding Mom’s book of shadows - it’s not a book but a suitcase
• The suitcase moves and Nick, Faye & Cassie see something move under he skin
• Heat of the sun, burn like fire – Diana,. Faye Adam try to burn knife she is using on Nick

• Plus quickly puts the teen in to ritual mode lighting 3 candles in a circle clockwise, then sage burn some in each candle

Arc

• Crystal freaks out possessed host, which turns out to be Nick
• Jane says only way to destroy a demon is to drown it or burn it, they burn the suitcase of snake demons
• Diana says that their parents were punished by The Elders, and that their powers were taken away (inferences that Elders have their power)
• Looks like Dawn & Charles are trying to locate the 6 crystals from their circle to rejoin and restore their power
• Dawn says their more that the teens will find the more than they will dig
• Abaddon (possession demon) says ‘We have unfinished business" to Dawn, that he wants a circle which was what he was brought there to do’

• Diana/Adam talk about how originally they were the only 2 witches they knew and it sounds like that changed when she found the book of shadows
