Congratulations to Tatiana MaslanyOrphan Black is one show that knocked peoples socks off in 2013, and the amazing multi-role performance from Tatiana Maslany is huge part of it.  The science fiction series has received tons of acclaim and it's very exciting to see Tatiana Maslany acknowledged.

People's Choice Awards Nominations 2014

I'm excited that so many of our shows are included in this years People's Choice Awards Nominations.  You can vote now on the nominations, and the show will air on January 8, 2014.  Awards season has officially begun! Now let's take a look at the nominations that includes shows we talk about here at Hexed...

Tatiana Maslay in Orphan Black

It's not surprize to see many familiar and favourite names in Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor and Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actress categoriews, I can easily agree with many of the noms of Andrew Lincoln, Ian Somerhalder, Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Stephen Amell; and for the ladies Emilia Clarke, Ginnifer Goodwin, Kristin Kreuk, Nina Dobrev and Tatiana Maslany.  For acting chops we also have Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Joseph Morgan Favorite Actor in a New TV Series nominated for Dracula and The Originals (assumed) respectively, although I think it's a bit of a cheat to have Joseph Morgan considered he played Klaus on Vampire Diaries for several seasons.  That being said, I would still probably vote for him as his acting really is that good.

Joseph Morgan as Klaus

Chemistry is always important between characters, and in the Favorite On-Screen Chemistry the heat gets turned up with a nom of Damon & Elena - The Vampire Diaries.  And they give it up to the boys too with Favorite TV Bromance nom going to Sam, Dean & Castiel for Supernatural.  Although, does it count as a bromance, if 2 of the 3 are brothers?  I would vote form them anyway!

Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins as Dean, Sam & Cass in Supernatural

I'm sure we'll talk about if we consider Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead an antihero, as he is nominated in the Favorite TV Anti-Hero category along with Dexter Morgan - Dexter, Jaime Lannister - Game of Thrones, Norman Bates - Bates Motel and Walter White - Breaking Bad.

For shows as a whole, the ones we talk about here dominated the Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show category with nominations going to Beauty and the Beast, Once Upon A Time, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead.  I wonder if one day we'll see enough of these shows that we might even get a category for horror as well, as a few of those do blur the lines of Sci-Fi/Fantasy to the beyond.

I think the Favorite New TV Drama is one that is always interesting to watch, and of the shows we talk about all of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Dracula, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, The Originals, Reign, Sleepy Hollow and The Tomorrow People were all nominated!  Last year's winner was Beauty and the Beast.  I wonder what this years will be?

Interesting to see that both American Horror Story and The White Queen are in the Favorite TV Movie/Miniseries (along with Sharknado).  I wonder where the line between a regular show, and a miniseries is?

2013 Canadian Screen Awards Nominations Announced

The Canadian Screen Awards Nominations were recently announced, these are the new combination awards previously known as the Genies (for Canadian film) and Gemini's (for Canadian TV) awarded by The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television to recognize excellence in film, television and digital media productions.

I was thrilled to see many of the shows we chat about here at Hexed: Sisterhood of the Supernatural were recognized including Haven, Lost Girl, Continuum, Being Human (North American), The Listener, Sanctuary, Camelot, XIII: The Series and Todd and the Book of Pure Evil. And because always point out Star Trek whenever it does (or doesn't!) pop up, I have to also cheer for William Shatner's documentary The Captains in which he chats with actors who portrayed captains in the Star Trek universe.

I'm especially happy to see the nomination for Emily Rose of Haven who is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role Haven for Audrey Parker's Day Off, I know last year we were very vocal about not seeing her in this category. Ksenia Solo also gets a big cheer for her nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Program or Series for Lost Girl - The Girl Who Fae'd With Fire/Truth and Consequences; last year she was nominated for (and won) a Gemini for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Series in Oh Kappa My Kappa/Sorority/Fae Day.   Another happy moments is seeing the new Continuum getting lots of recognition with a whopping 5 nominations.  Congratulations to all the nominees!

Below I've listed a selection of the TV nominations for the 2013 Canadian Screen Awards, but only a selection.  Basically, if any show we talk about on Hexed was nominated, I've listed it below. I would have loved to share all the noms but it's in PDF format and 44 pages which is too much to translate!

2013 People's Choice Awards Nominations

It official feels like we are getting close to the end of the year when award nomination announcements start hitting us left, right and centre. One of the awards I always look forward to hearing the announcement for is the People's Choice Awards here as it's truly a touchstone of what people are loving RIGHT NOW.  And I'm happy to see that many of the TV shows we discuss here on Hexed have made the nominations list including: Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, The Walking Dead, Grimm, Doctor Who, Once Upon a Time, True Blood and Game of Thrones.

The Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show category alone holds all shows we've talked about with the nominees of Doctor Who, Once Upon a Time, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead.  Another genre heavy category is Favorite Dramatic TV Actor with the nominees of Ian Somerhalder, Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Nathan Fillion and Paul Wesley.  While Favorite Dramatic TV Actress is less heavy with genre folk, Nina Dobrev of The Vampire Diaries is nominated here along with Ginnifer Goodwin of Once Upon a Time.  I was surprized at the lone 1 nomination for Grimm, however it broke into the more traditional category of Favorite Dramatic TV Show along with Once Upon a Time.  I wonder what would happen if they branched these to for specific categories, or added supporting actor/actress or guest stars.

One of my favourite categories is Favorite TV Fan Following with the Gleeks - Glee, Little Liars - Pretty Little Liars, Oncers - Once Upon a Time, SPNFamily - Supernatural and TVDFamily - The Vampire Diaries even though they all hold terms I've never even heard of!

The most nominations goes to the 11 shows included in Favorite New TV Drama: 666 Park Avenue, Arrow, Beauty and the Beast, Chicago Fire, Elementary, Emily Owens, M.D., Last Resort, The Mob Doctor, Nashville, Revolution and Vegas.  It would be hard for me to choose between all of those shows, as many of them I now watch regularly.

Vote for The 2013 People's Choice Awards here.  The awards will be broadcasted on January 9, 2013 on CBS.

People Choice Awards 2012

Photobucket

Congratulations to Supernatural for 2 wins at this years People's Choice Awards. The show picked up but Favorite Network TV Drama and Favourite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show!

I have to admit we'd likely be happy with any of the Favourite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show as it was in competition with Fringe, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries & The Walking Dead. The competition in the Favorite Network TV Drama included another one of our shows with The Vampire Diaries alongside The Good Wife, Grey's Anatomy and House.

The Vampire Diaries gets a nod as well with Favorite TV Drama Actress going to Nina Dobrev who plays Elena Gilbert.

26th Gemini Award Nominees!

The 26th Gemini Awards Nominations have been announced and I'm really excited that many of the shows that Suzie & I talk about here at Hexed: Sisterhood of the Supernatural are up for awards! For anyone unfamiliar with the Gemini's there are the Canadian TV awards, or more formally "The Gemini Awards honour the best in Canadian television as determined by members of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and other industry professionals". I love FAQ pages. The qualifying period is between May 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011 and for series' 50% of the series must first broadcast at that time.

So, back to the shows. Looking at TV shows that Suzie & I talk about here at Hexed so that means shows of a paranormal persuasion with some scifi and crime sneaking in. Leading the way for our faves is Lost Girl & Being Human (North American) with 5 nominations each! I'm particularly excited about Lost Girl as we have been huge supporters of the show since it's very first episode, especially Ksenia Solo who plays Kenzi and she has her very own nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Series in Oh Kappa My Kappa/Sorority/Fae Day. Lost Girl is also up for Best Writing in a Dramatic Series, Best Photography in a Dramatic Program or Series, Best Achievement in Casting (Vexed) and Best Cross-Platform Project - Fiction (Digital Media). It's exciting times for Lost Girl, after the recent news of Season 2 going to 22 episodes, being at ComicCon and a strong presence at the upcoming FanExpo, they are going to be busy, busy faes!

Being Human (North American) is also up for 5 nominations including genre traditional nods for Best Achievement in Make-Up and Best Visual Effects, plus Best Direction in a Dramatic Series and Best Picture Editing in a Dramatic Program or Series. But I think the biggest and bloody nod goes to Sam Witwer who plays Aidan and is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for the episode I Want You Back (From the Dead). He's up against some very impressive competition: Enrico Colantoni for Flashpoint, Hugh Dillion for Durham Country, Callum Keith Rennie for Shattered and Michael Riley for Being Erica. Wow. That is an impressive group of talented actors.

From the happy to the not so, I'm a little saddened and shocked to see one of our most beloved shows, Haven, is only up for 1 nomination: Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Series - John Dunsworth as Dave Teagues in Spiral/Ball and Chain. It's a well deserved nomination, especially as his performance in Spiral truly is amazing and he has of the best moments of the season but I really would have loved to see more acknowledgements here. Specifically for the brilliant writing on the show which obvious has a long term plan and also for performance by Emily Rose as the series lead character Audrey.

Looking through the nominations I spotted several of the series we've talked about on occasion here at Hexed, including the sadly-cancelled Endgame with an impressive 5 nominations (seriously... that show was awesome. And why no nomination for Shawn Doyle? He's fantastic!), 3 nominations for The Listener & Sanctuary and 2 nominations for Stargate Universe. Lots of sideways competition with several of the shows up for visual effects & make up which tend to be half genre shows and half period shows, like The Tudors & The Borgias alongside Being Human, Sanctuary & Stargate Universe for Visual Effects.

That's the highlights for the shows we chat about (and detailed nominations are below), but if you want to see the nominees for all 100 categories you can read all about it here (it's a PDF). The Gemini's will be unveiled over three nights: August 30 & 31 and September 7 which will have an accompanying live broadcast on CBC Television.
