Paranormal Pick of the Week: The Almighty Johnsons Finale and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Premiere

We are heading into major premiere territory as the fall premieres are in full force, and although Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is one that everyone is waiting for I have to also honour the shows that are summing up, including one of our faves: The Almighty Johnsons which has it's Season 3 Finale this week.  Who can play favourites between superheroes and Gods?  I'd be happy to watch them battle it out, but for now they both get to be our  Paranormal Pick of the Week:

The Almighty Johnsons ~ Season 3 Finale
Thursday September 26, 2013 at 9pm on Space

It's been one heck of a season for The Almighty Johnsons, I am always so impressed that the show keeps us entertained with so much humour and so much heart.  I don't have a clue how they will wrap everything up, but they often surpass expectations on finales so I have a feeling it will be a big one.  This season it's been airing in tandem with the New Zealand airings, which has been such a treat to be so up to date.  I really hope we get more of this awesome show.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ~ Series Premiere
Tuesday September 24, 2013 at 8pm on CTV

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is definitely one of, if not the, most anticipated new series this fall.  Getting an actual team of superheroes show on TV is so exciting that it's almost hard to even stand waiting.  I'm really cheering for it to be awesome, and if the trailer is any indication I think we are in for one wild ride.  And given that the team deals with the 'unknown' it qualifies as a paranormal show!

Also Awesome:
  • Fangasm Series Premiere Tuesday September 24, 2013 at 10pm ET on Space; I'm still not quite sure what this show is going to be like.  It looks like a reality competition show but not sure how it works.  I guess we'll see on Tuesday!
  • Once Upon A Time Season 3 Premiere Sunday September 29, 2013 at 7pm on CTV
  • Revolution Season 2 Premiere Wednesday September 25, 2013 at 8pm ET/PT on CityTV

September 2013 Paranomal TV New and Returning Air Dates

Pictured - The Cast of Sleepy Hollow

September is just around the corner and with it marks the return of Fall TV. Although the heavy hitter month for Hexed shows is the spooky month of October, we certainly see a lot of shows we care about hitting the small screen in the sweet month of September. It's a free for all than runs the gambit of shows we cover from non-fiction awesomenss of Ghost Mine to many fiction shows, new series like Sleepy Hollow (pictured above) and and returning new faves like The Neighbors.

I would even hazard to say September includes the most highly anticipated show of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as well as shows that just popped on the radar like Fangasm. With so many options, it's time to get our TV rooms (or favoured devices) ready and enjoy what the month will bring. Let's take a look what is to come in the September Preview:

Ghost Mine ~ Season 2 Premiere
Wednesday September 4, 2013 at 10pm ET on Space

Ghost Mine: Back on the Mountain
Wednesday September 4, 2013 at 9pm ET on Space

Genre: Non-Fiction Paranormal/Reality

I'm so excited to share that Season 2 of Ghost Mine will be starting in September.  Suzie and I became fast fans of the show when it debuted in January 2013, completely won over by both the paranormal investigators and the mining crew who all do extremely dangerous and challenging work. We watched and loved every episode of Season 1 and are so happy it's back for Season 2 and with a whopping 12 episodes to enjoy.  If that wasn't enough, this season kicks off with a special episode called Ghost Mine: Back on the Mountain and according the Patrick Doyle's Facebook Page, Adam "Edge" Copeland (who plays Dwight on Haven) will be hosting. This season is going to be so much fun.

Series Description: "In the remote woods of Oregon lies one of the richest gold mines in the United States that was abandoned 80 years ago when a series of tragedies gave it an infamous reputation for being haunted. Now, a new owner has decided to take on the notorious legend and reopen the mine, assembling a colorful team of miners – both seasoned and new – to battle the elements along with a pair of experienced paranormal investigators, in hopes of finding a fortune. This strong-willed and superstitious group of miners will face the day-to-day challenges of mining, aided by the paranormal investigators who unravel the mysteries surrounding the mine, including historic Masonic connections and a spirit who has been known to haunt the area for generations."

Ghost Mine Season 2 will consist of 12 episodes.

Sleepy Hollow ~ Series Premiere
Monday Sept 16, 2013 at 9pm ET/PT on Global

Genre: Drama/Mystery/Historical

It's too soon to say if this one if a show we will be chatting about, but we are hoping there will be a spooky side that comes out and it not be too procedural and/or Americana (not holding our breath on that one!). But it's definitely got great atmosphere and an interesting story, which is always a great start.

Here is a series description: "This thrilling new action-adventure drama is a modern-day retelling of Washington Irving’s classic tale. Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison, Parade's End) is resurrected and pulled two-and-a-half centuries through time to find that the world is on the brink of destruction, and that he is humanity’s last hope, forcing him to team up with a contemporary police officer (Nicole Beharie, 42) to unravel a mystery which dates all the way back to the founding fathers."

Sleepy Hollow stars Nicole Beharie, John Cho, Orlando Jones, Tom Mison and Katia Winter.

The Neighbors ~ Season 2 Premiere
Friday September 20, 2013 at 8:30 on CTV Two

Genre: Science Fiction/Comedy

We were late to the game on the delightful science fiction comedy of The Neighbors, but once we got on the train we didn't look back.  It's such a quirky show, following a human family that unknowingly moves into a gated community of aliens.  I have to tell you, the first episode I saw was the Halloween one, and boy-oh-boy I didn't even know who were the aliens!  But over time it became clear who was who, and that some aliens just want to have fun.  This was a surprizing stand out to last years new shows, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing it's sophomore season.

Series Description: "THE NEIGHBORS follows one family’s attempt at a normal life in the suburbs, only to discover that the neighbours are aliens masquerading as suburbanites. Debbie (Jami Gertz) and Marty Weaver (Lenny Venito) recently bought a home in Hidden Hills, a coveted gated community in New Jersey, to provide a better life for their three kids. It's clear from day one that the residents of Hidden Hills are a little different. For starters, their new neighbors all have pro-athlete names like Reggie Jackson (Tim Jo), Jackie Joyner-Kersee (Toks Olagundoye), Dick Butkis (Ian Patrick) and Larry Bird (Simon Templeman). To their horror, the Weavers soon learn that the entire community is comprised of aliens from Zabvron masquerading as suburbanites where the men bear children and everyone cries green goo from their ears. Two worlds collide with hilarious consequences as everyone discovers they can "totally relate" and learn a lot from each other."

The Neighbors stars Jami Gertz, Lenny Venito, Simon Templeman, Toks Olagundoye, Clara Mamet, Tim Jo, Ian Patrick, Max Charles and Isabella Cramp.  Season 2 of The Neighbors will consist of 22 episodes.

Revolution ~ Season 2
Wednesday September 25, 2013 at 8pm ET/PT on CityTV

Genre: Drama/Science Fiction/Conspiracy

We only talked about the first few episodes of Revolution, and I'm not sure either of us will be watching it this year (it got too Civil War Americana themed and not enough science fiction-y for me) but I know that people do watch it as it's one of the higher rated shows we cover.  So, if you watch it - enjoy!

Series Description: "Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working? Well, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible. And without any modern technology, who can tell us why?

Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down, the lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it?

On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. And a young woman’s life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously – and unbeknownst to her – had something to do with the blackout. This brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring coming-of-age journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future. What would you do without it all? In this epic adventure thriller from Supernatural’s Eric Kripke and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, a family struggles to reunite in a post-apocalyptic American landscape: a world of empty cities, local militias and heroic freedom fighters, where every single piece of technology — computers, planes, cars, phones, even lights — has mysteriously blacked out … forever."

Season 2 of Revolution will consist of 22 episodes.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. ~ Series Premiere
Tuesday September 24, 2013 at 8pm on CTV

Genre: Superhero/Paranormal

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is definitely one of, if not the, most anticipated new series this fall.  Getting an actual team of superheroes show on TV is so exciting that it's almost hard to even stand waiting.  I'm really cheering for it to be awesome, and if the trailer is any indication I think we are in for one wild ride.  And given that it deals with the 'unknown', that *technically* makes it a paranormal show!

Series Description: "Clark Gregg reprises the role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel's feature films in MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D., as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown around the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson's team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage; Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot and martial artist; Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer; and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet)."

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg, Brett Dalton, Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge and Chloe Bennet.

Fangasm ~ Series Premiere
Tuesday September 24, 2013 at 10pm ET on Space

Genre: Docu-Series/Non-Fiction

I'm not quite sure what to make of Fangasm, and I'm not sure if it's actually some kind of competition show or not.  But, Stan Lee (awesome) and fandom is enough to get me to watch it.  And at only 6 eps, it's going to fly by quickly.

Series Description:

"From the producer of Jersey Shore comes Fangasm – a six-part docuseries that celebrates the incredibly unique, often misunderstood, and infinitely fascinating fan girl and fan boy culture. The show follows seven pop culture-obsessed fans (whose passions range from comic books and collectibles to science fiction and fantasy) living together in an LA apartment complex and working together at Stan Lee's Comikaze Expo. The seven must contend with each others oversized personalities and conflicting fandom as they vie for an opportunity to work within Lee's organization.

Because when different passions come together, you get a real big bang."

Fangasm is a 6-part docu-series.

Once Upon a Time ~ Season 3 Premiere
Sunday September 29, 2013 at 7pm on CTV

Genre: Fantasy

Once Upon a Time is a show I continue to be surprized at that I've not jumped into watch, although I know Suzie watches it.  I always love looking at the stills and I feel like I've seen it through the years with snippits and commercials along the way.  It's great to see a fantasy series doing so well, I'm thinking the early timeslot and family appeal has a lot to do with it. I don't know if I'll jump in this year, or one day wait and catch up on the whole thing.  But for the fans of the show get to start back up right at the end of the month.

Series Description: "ONCE UPON A TIME is a fairytale set in modern times. Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), a 28-year-old bail bonds collector has been on her own since she was abandoned as a baby. But when the son she gave up years ago finds her, everything starts to change. Henry (Jared Gilmore) is now 10 years old and in desperate need of Emma’s help. Henry believes that Emma is the missing daughter of Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas). According to his book of fairytales, they sent her away to protect her from the Evil Queen’s curse, which trapped the fairytale world forever. Emma isn’t a believer, but when she brings Henry back to Storybrooke, she suspects his strange New England town may be more than it seems. Storybrooke is a magical place where fairytale characters are alive, frozen in time and can’t remember their true identities. To win the good vs. evil epic battle, Emma will have to accept her destiny and fight like hell."

Once Upon a Time
stars Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Robert Carlyle, Lana Parilla, Jared Gilmore, James Dornan and Josh Dallas.  Season 3 will consist of 22 episodes.

Paranormal Picks of the Week ~ Premiere of Being Human (UK), Teen Wolf and Paranormal Witness

Being Human UK's Tom, Hal and Alex

I thought it was going to be a quiet week (and possible quiet summer), but the tide has changed and we have not one...not two...but THREE series premiering this week. Not only that, all three of them are big favourites of Suzie and mine: Teen Wolf, Being Human (UK) and Paranormal Witness. There is no way to call out one over the others, so all three are making their marks as the Paranormal Pick(s) of the Week:

Teen Wolf ~ Season 3 Premiere
Monday June 3, 2013 at 10pm ET on Much Music

Summer means Teen Wolf to me. Every since the show started in 2011, I've loved it. The crazy mysteries, the beautiful awkwardness, the awesome cast and of course... the werewolves. So much happens in each episode and I rarely have any idea what will be coming next. I can't wait to see out where they take it this season!

L-R Michael Socha as Tom, Kate Bracken as Alex, and Damien Molony as Hal

Being Human (UK) ~ Season 5 Premiere
Saturday June 8, 2013 at 9pm * ET on Space

This is not only the fifth season of Being Human (UK), but it's also the final season of Being Human (UK). Although I will be sad to see the show go, I am very happy that will get to see how this supernatural roommate drama sums up the series. It's been an emotional roller coaster through the years and I can't imagine it being any different as it comes to a close.

*remember Being Human (UK) is an extra-long show clocking in at 1h 15 min*

Paranormal Witness ~ Season 3 Premiere
Wednesday June 5, 2013 at 10pm ET on Space

This show is one of the scariest out there, and it's non-fiction to boot. I was a latecomer to loving it, only falling hard mid-season 2 but I'm happy I came back to it because the amazing storytelling that completely honours the truth of the experiences is extremely impressive. I'm looking forward to Paranormal Witness in it's third (and expanded) season, but I might have to watch it during the day with the lights on.

Deep South Paranormal's Hart Fortenbery and Keith Ramsey

Also Awesome
  • Deep South Paranormal Finale Tuesday June 4, 2013 at 9 on Space; I found this non-fiction paranormal investigation show absolutely charming. I loved the combination of old world folklore plus technology with a lot of heart and compassion throughout. I really hope it gets renewed.
  • Revolution Season 1 Finale Monday June 3, 2013 10pm on CityTV; while we didn't talk about Revolution that much this year it was certainly one of the impressive successes of the new crop of 2012-13 shows and was confirmed to be renewed for a season 2. I wonder if they found out what turned off all the power.
  • Merlin in Syndication Monday - Friday 3pm (and 9am) on Space as of Monday June 3 2013; with the 5 seasons having come to a close it's a very smart choice to start airing this one daily! I found Merlin to be a highly enjoyable fantasy series, and would easily recommend it for anyone who hasn't tried it out yet.
  • Sinbad and Primeval: New World Season 1 rebroadcastings on Space; 2 great series to enjoy this summer starting from their very first episodes on Saturday June 8, 2013 at 7pm and 8pm respectively. This also concurrent pairs to the US airings of the shows premieres on the US SyFy channel.

Ep 134 Paranormal TV Scorecard 2012-13

  • Hey Everyone! It's been a while but Suzie and Shannon are back and we are looking back at the new shows that debuted during the 2012/13 season that were either paranormal, or thought to be at one point possibly paranormal (some are hard to tell before they start!). We share of if the shows that have been renewed or cancelled and weight in on if we are happy (or not) with that decision. We also dive into not only fall start, but also winter start shows and share our thoughts on a few shows that have even started recently including a lenghty discussion on Defiance and being quite impressed with the oddness of Hemlock Grove. And our photo this week Suzie took with her awesome camera of the Full Flower May Moon! Isn't it beautiful?
  • Many of the cancelled shows will have their remaining episodes air starting in June, including Cult, 666 Park Avenue and Zero Hour. You can see a full schedule here, and they will also be in our June New and Returning post up later this week. We hope to be back soon to check in on how our regs finished out their seasons, things have been rather challenging for us so keeping up with TV hasn't always been possible.
  • Thank you to everyone for your patience in our time off between shows, we do update here at the site and our Facebook page with news so you can always connect with us online.

Grimm Picked Up for Season 3

Good news for Grimmsters! NBC has confirmed that Grimm is Picked up for third season with 22 Episodes to air during the 2013-14 Season. I find this very reassuring, especially after the recent time change from Fridays to Tuesdays. Along with Grimm, Revolution has also been renewed for an second season of 22 episodes.

Here is more about the renewals from a media release: "UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – April 26, 2013 – NBC has announced the renewal of five key drama series for the 2013-14 season: “Revolution,” “Chicago Fire,” “Parenthood,” “Grimm” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”

All have been given 22-episode orders.

The announcement was made by Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment.

“On the verge of our 2013 fall scheduling decisions, we’re pleased to renew five drama series that will be important to our new season line-up,” Salke said. “We’re proud and very appreciative of all of the actors, producers, writers and directors who work so hard to deliver such high-quality work week in and week out. These complex shows represent a broad range of genres and tones, and all of them stand out for us in a television landscape now filled with one-hour series. We’re especially pleased to be renewing “Revolution” and “Chicago Fire” — two first-season successes — and there will be more returning series announcements made in the next couple of weeks.”"

And specifically about Grimm: "“Grimm,” inspired by the classic Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales, is a Universal Television and Hazy Mills production. The series was created by Stephen Carpenter, David Greenwalt, Jim Kouf. Sean Hayes, Todd Milliner and Norberto Barba also serve as executive producers along with Greenwalt and Kouf.

“Grimm” is Friday’s #1 series in adults 18-49 and is up versus one year ago by 14 percent in 18-49 rating (with a 2.4 vs. the year-ago 2.1, “most current”) and is up 12 percent in total viewers (6.9 million vs. 5.2 million)."

And specifically about Revolution: "“Revolution,” the Monday night drama that centers on a family trying to reunite amidst a worldwide power failure, is executive produced by Eric Kripke, J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk (“Lost,” “Star Trek”). The series is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Bad Robot Productions, Kripke Enterprises and Warner Bros. Television.

“Revolution” is the season’s top-rated drama on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox and top-rated new series among those networks in adults 18-49, scoring a 4.6 rating, 12 share and 11.8 million viewers overall in “most current” averages for the season to date. “Revolution” has teamed with “The Voice” to help improve NBC’s Mondays this season versus last by 24 percent in 18-49 (with a 3.6 rating vs. a 2.9)."

You have voted and the results are now in for the Hexed Poll asking: Which New 2012/13 Shows Have You Stuck With? The winner with 100% retention is Arrow! I think Arrow really has been on of the stand outs of 2012/13 with broad appear, solid action and enough to keep us coming back for more.

Making a tie for second place at 66% retention we have Elementary and Revolution, which are the 2 that dropped off my schedule. And the final slot is shared by Beauty and the Beast and Cult with 33% each, both of which I am loving and are definitely the dark horses of the year.

Poll Results:
  • 100% - Arrow
  • 66% - Elementary
  • 66% - Revolution
  • 33% - Beauty and the Beast
  • 33% - Cult

Also Awesome:
  • Doctor Who - Season 7 Returns Saturday March 30, 2013 on Space, this one feels more like a new start to me but it's apparently a continuation. The episode - the first in a run of 8 - is directed by Colm McCarthy whose previous credits include Hustle, Spooks and Endeavour. See more about Doctor Who at Space.ca.

Revolution ~ Season 1 Returns
Monday March 25, 2013 on CityTV

Genre: Science Fiction/Post Apocalyptic

This one didn't quite stick with me but I know the ratings have held very strong in the post apocalyptic/flashback heavy action/revolutionary series starring Tracy Spiridakos, Billy Burke and Giancarlo Esposito. It's not too long to wait for new episodes which return this month.

Game of Thrones ~ Seaseon 3 Premiere
Sunday March 31, 2013 on HBO Canada

Genre: Fantasy

Description: "Based on the bestselling book series by George R.R. Martin, Game of Thrones is an epic drama set in the grounded fantasy continent of Westeros, where ambitious men and women of both honor and ill-repute live in a land where summers and winters can last years. Season 2 is based on Martin's second novel in the series, "A Clash of Kings," and plays out against the backdrop of a fast-approaching winter – the season of the white raven. In Kings Landing, the coveted Iron Throne is occupied by cruel young Joffrey, counseled by his conniving mother Cersei and uncle Tyrion, who has been appointed Hand of the King. But the Lannister hold on the Throne is under assault on many fronts. There's Robb Stark, son of the slain Lord of Winterfell Ned Stark, who seeks autonomy in the north and has taken Cersei's brother Jaime prisoner in battle; Daenerys Targaryen, looking to shore up her depleted power in the east through three newborn dragons; Stannis Baratheon, brother of the late king Robert, who rejects Joffrey's legitimacy and aligns with a powerful priestess to raise a naval attack; Stannis' brother Renly, who has maintained his own claim since fleeing Kings Landing; and Theon Greyjoy, who was raised by the Starks, but whose blood ties in his native Iron Islands runs deep. In the meantime, a new leader is rising among the wildings outside the Wall, adding new perils for Jon Snow and the order of the Night's Watch. With tensions and treaties, animosity and alliances, Season 2 of Game of Thrones promises to be a thrilling journey through a riveting, unforgettable fictional landscape."

Ep 115 Paranormal TV Oct 2 - 9, 2012

The season premieres continue to roll in and on this week's episode of Hexed, Suzie & Shannon chat premieres of Supernatural S8, Falling Skies S1 and Bedlam S2, continue to love Haven, Grimm and Alphas as well as living through a pretty challenging episode of Fringe. The big surprize of the week was that we absolutely ADORED the extra-long episode of Paranormal Witness which featured the 1975 Travis Walton abduction, a very dear to our hearts story and the show dealt with it extremely well. Our hearts go out to all of those involved.

We'll be back next week to chat more of all of our shows, plus check in on new series Arrow (which we discuss super-briefly here), Beauty and the Beast as well as the Season 4 Premiere of Vampire Diaries.

Be sure to vote in our new poll of what new shows *you* are adding to your regular viewing schedule. With so much new to enjoy, it's hard to fit it all in! Show Notes

On this weeks episode of Hexed, Suzie & Shannon are having fun with the new show Hot Set, continuing to love Face Off and totally swooned by The Almightly Johnsons.  We also check out the series premiere of Revolution and speak very briefly on a very disturbing episode of Paranormal Witness.  We do talk about the shows in depth, so please watch them first and then listen & enjoy.

Remember: lots of shows come back or start next week (Grimm, Fringe, Haven, Last Resort & Elementary), but they will air after we record so we won't be talking about them quite just yet.
