12 Days of SPACE-MAS 2013

.

It's TIME! The snow is start to piling, the tree is twinkling and there are lots of presents to wrap, cookies to bake (and eat) and 12 whole days of awesome programming on Space to celebrate the 12 Days of SPACE-MAS!  From December 21 - January 5, 2014 it's going to be marathon and movie mayhem, in the best possible way.

I'm partial to the Face Off SERIES Marathon. That's right: all 5 seasons of Face Off will be shown from Dec 26 - 29, 2013. That's a lot of make up challenges to enjoy. We also have the Orphan Black marathon which is particularly excellent for anyone who missed it the first time round. Of course there is the annual Christmas with the Doctor including the Doctor Who Christmas Special. Plus lots and lots of movies.

Let's look at the entire schedule.  Fire up your sonic screwdriver and let the butterbeer roll!

Saturday, Dec. 21 – Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Fangasm Finale

You'd think with it being Halloween this week there would be tons of specials and shows to enjoy, but I have to tell you it's not only slim pickings but some of our shows aren't even on this week (Sleepy Hollow I'm looking at you!). But the good news is, we have and awesome finale to enjoy for this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week with Fangasm!

Fangasm - Season 1 Finale
Tuesday October 29, 2013 at 10pm on Space

It took us a little bit for me to warm up this reality series that follows a group of interns vying for a job with Stan Lee. In part that came from the fact that the show focuses on the social dynamics in the group over the internship, but as the season trucked along we got to see all of them do some pretty amazing stuff, and some step up and some mess up. We are all human, eh? In time it did win us over and became one that we take a lot about on Hexed even with our crazy number of new shows this fall. But now it's time to find out the big question: will any of the interns will be offered a job with Stan Lee? I can't wait to find out!

Also Awesome

  • Halloween chock full'o'zombies on Space! Starting with Zombie Apocalypse at 6pm ET, Rise of the Zombies at 8pm ET and finally Zombie Night at 10pm ET all on Halloween, this Thursday October 31, 2013.

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Being Human (UK) Series Finale

Although it's been off the schedule for a few weeks and is sneaking back in at a different time slot in a double-header for the final episodes of the season, there is no way that Being Human (UK) won't get the honour of being this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week:

Being Human (UK) ~ Series Finale
Sunday July 28, 2013
Final 2 episodes: 9pm and 10:15pm ET on Space

We've be talking about this British series following supernatural roommates for years now, and although it's changed a lot and caused a fair amount of commotion in our reactions, there is no denying it's one of the best shows we've discussed.  It's sad to see Being Human (UK) come to an end, but at least they new it was coming which hopefully will lead us to one heck of a series finale.

Also Awesome
  • Paranormal Witness timeslot change!  The show is moving from 10pm on Wednesdays to it's new timeslot of 9pm Wednesday on Space.  Technically now awesome, but I did want to let people know, especially if it requires some changing to watching to recording habits.
  • Joe Rogan Questions Everything Series Premiere Wednesday July 24 at 10pm on Space (yes, it takes the normal timeslot of Paranormal Witness).  This non-fiction show
  • Sharktopus on Space Tuesday July 23, 2013 at 9pm ET I have to admit that it brings a warm feeling to my heart that one of my favourite shark movies will be airing on my birthday!  If you haven't seen this one before, it's well worth a watch for it's B-Movie goodness.

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Grimm Season 2 Finale

I bet you thought after last weeks epic string of finales we were done for the season, eh?  Nope, nope, nope!  There is more to enjoy and this week it's time to get your Wesen on and join Nick and the gang to see how they wrap up (or cliff hang...) Season 2 of Grimm which is easily the pick for this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week.

Grimm ~ Season 2 Finale
Tuesday May 21, 2013 at 10pm EST on CTV

Can you believe this season right after the 2012 Summer Olympics?  It's been an epic and long drawn-out year for Grimm with early starts, big breaks between in episodes, changes in the airing night as well as time, and here in Canada even the channel changed!  But I'm glad it's now back on antenna-friendly CTV (over CTV2).  The good news is, the fans stay strong to the show has been renewed for a third season 3 and will be back this fall on Friday nights to boot.  Here's hoping everyone will be back to being happy Wesens!

Also Awesome:
  • Bates Motel Season 1 Finale on Monday May 20, 2013 at 10pm EST on A and E; I really wanted to see this creepy looking series but it came just when I cut cable and is not available to stream here in Canada.  Maybe it will join the queue of awesome at Netflix and I'll catch it there.  Bates Motel has been renewed for Season 2 so we will be seeing more of it in the future.
  • Source Code on Space Friday May 24, 2013 at 9pm EST, this great science fiction film from Moon director Duncan Jones is a must-see for any scifi fans, especially of the mind-bending category.  I'm thrilled to see it airing on Space!

How could this not be this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week? It can't! It's definitely our pick. And if you like it, there will be more as the second season of the series has already been commissioned. Now that's a good sign if I've ever heard one.

He does his best to keep the peace amongst a vast array of clashing characters in this lawless international free zone that sits on top of the world’s last remaining oil." Paranormal Pick of the Week: Camelot and The Tempest on TCM Canada

While our friends south of the boarder are going to be chomping on turkey and shopping Black Friday deals, it's a regular week up here in Canada with the exception of having new TV episodes to enjoy slashed by half or more. But have no fear as there is always something to watch, and for this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week we can enjoy movies on the small screen care of TCM Canada:

Camelot (1967)
Friday November 23, 2012 at 11PM ET on TCM Canada
Arthurian musical starring Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Harris and Franco Nero, directed by Joshua Logan. I thought I had seen most Arthurian films, but ran across this musical a few years ago and it was such a treat. It's amazing to see the 60's free-spirtedness eek into a classic love story, and you can't beat the cast of Richard Harris as Arthur, Vanessa Redgrave as Guenevere and Franco Nero (who is married to Vanessa Redgrave) and Lancelot. It's a beautiful film, romantic and whimsical, and it's a treat to see it being shown on TV.  If you want to see a snippet, IMDb has a sweet trailer, complete with singing.  Yes, there is singing!

The Tempest (1979)
Friday November 23, 2012 at 11PM ET on on TCM Canada
I find this to be one of the Shakespearean plays I'm continually dawn to for the mystical elements, but still have almost zero understanding of and therefore am always curious about seeing more versions. This one is from 1979, is directed by Derek Jarman and stars Peter Bull, David Meyer Neil Cunningham, Heathcote Williams and Toyah Willcox. This version looks stunning and is described as "An experimental and anachronistic adaptation of William Shakespeare's play which casts the mad Prospero as a struggling artist desperate to transform his bleak world into something more spriritually satisfying." that's enough to get me to check it out!

Also Awesome
Although it's a quiet week for most of our shows due to the US holiday there are a few that are still airing new episodes this week:
  • Mon Nov 19, 2012: New episodes of Falling Skies and Primeval: New World on Space
  • Fri Nov 23, 2012: New episode of Haven on Showcase, which should bring the Canada and US schedules into alignment
  • Sun Nov 25, 2012: New episodes of 666 Park Avenue and The Walking Dead

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Bedlam Season 2 Finale on Space

Image: Nikesh Patel & Lacey Turner during filming of Bedlam S2

Bedlam Season 2 Finale
Saturday November 10, 2012 at 8pm ET on Space

Although Season 2 of Bedlam has had an (almost) completely different cast than Season 1, Bedlam it certainly has grown on me this season and I'm very curious to how they will wrap it all up. We have chatted about it on Hexed occasionally and it's nice to have a haunted house style show on to enjoy, which makes it this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week.  If you need to catch up on any episodes, you can watch them online over at Space's Website.

King Kong Lobby Card (source)

Also Awesome
  • King Kong (1933) - Sat Nov 10, 2012 at 1:15pm on TCM Canada, that's right the classic monster movie with the giant pre-historic ape. If you've not seen it, watching it on a Saturday afternoon is a perfect time to add it to your viewing card.
  • Earthquake (1974) - Sat Nov 10, 2012 at 5:00pm on AMC Canada, this is one 70's disaster movies that I'm not sure I've seen so I'm super keen to check it out this weekend! It stars Ava Gardner, Barry Sullivan, Charlton Heston and Geneviève Bujold and is directed by Mark Robson.
  • The Man with No Name Trilogy - Although it's not paranormal, I can't help but share that this awesome western trilogy starring Clint Eastwood will be airing on TCM Canada on Friday November 9, 2012 starting at 8pm. That's right, they are airing A Fistful of Dollars, A Few Dollars More *and* The Good, The Bad and The Ugly back to back to back. What a treat!

Well, we've survived the barrage of new show premieres and now it's time to get our scares on with some countdown to Halloween spirit. Thank goodness AMC stepped up to the plate providing us with plethora of Jason permutations in the Friday the 13th Films. With so many to choose from, the Friday the 13ths on AMC is the Paranormal Pick of the Week:

Also Awesome:
  • Primeval Season 4 Marathon: Sunday October 21, 2012 from 11am - 6pm EST on Space; I've been loving catching up with the series marathon style and am eagerly awaiting more dinosaur & anomaly goodness.
  • Spooky Movies on TCM Canada Wednesday October 17, 2012 - TCM is airing scary movies all evening and all through the night with Horror of Dracula, the Curse of Frankenstein, The Mummy, The Gorgon, The Devil's Bride and The Plague of Zombies.  That's a lot of monsters (and their families...) see schedule here.
  • American Horror Story Season 2 / Asylum beings on FX Canada on Wednesday October 17, 2012.  We tried this one out in Season 1 and didn't take to it, but I'm happy to see it is again available here in Canada on FX Canada although I still can't tell what it's being branded under 2 titles of Asylum and also American Horror Story.  It's a mystery - which seems to be quite fitting for the show.

Bigfoot on Space Saturday June 20, 2012 at 9pm ET

I'm a big fan of monster movies, and when I heard that a Bigfoot film starring 70's stars Danny Bonaduce (The Partridge Family) and Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch) I knew I had to see it. Bigfoot is directed by Bruce Davison (Off Season); and also stars Sherilyn Fenn, Andre Royo (The Wire), Bruce Davison, Howard Hesseman and Alice Cooper.

There is a whole lot of crazy going on when ex-musicians and rivals DJ Harley (Danny Bonaduce) and environmentalist Simon (Barry Williams) have a stand off over clearing trees to make way for a 80's revival concert in South Dakota. Little did they know that their rivalry would be the least of their worries when a monstrous creature beings to stir and wreaks havoc on the area. With the two forgive and forget to attack this massive Bigfoot together? Not bloody likely! Why loose the opportunity to have one more way to trump the other is way to tempting in this all-epic battle to get to the beast of Bigfoot.

It's been interesting to see see the trends in monster movies over the past few years, and I think the success of Mega Python vs. Gatoroid with Tiffany and Debbie Gibson gives a smart structure that is played on here to continue the meta theme and shine a light of seeing rivals facing off on the screen. Where Bigfoot one-ups Mega Python vs. Gatoroid though is, this time instead of pop stars we have actual actors, and I have to say that really helps as they can...act. I know I'm stating the obvious here, but I was pretty surprizing at how much of a difference it makes to have actors who can really hold their own and play well off each other and Danny Bonaduce and Barry Williams deliver that over and over again throughout the film. I also have to give credit to Bigfoot itself as the monster of the movie is quite good, being both scary and looking pretty gruesome and the effects were pretty solid. Sometimes it felt a little more King Kong than Bigfoot, but I really liked that it was actually in the film a fair amount and really went to town wrecking havoc and causing chaos. Now that's what you need in a good monster movie! Lots of havoc!

With the beauty of great rivals, an awesome monster and the fabulous meta backdrop to boot, Bigfoot was one heck of an enjoyable watch. I laughed a lot and absolutely adored the rivalry between Danny Bonaduce and Barry Williams who really played it up with each and every opportunity. I'd strongly recommend it to any B-movie fan whose looking for a good monster movie with some really good laughs.

Bigfoot is a SyFy Original Movie by The Asylum and will air here in Canada on Saturday June 30, 2012 at 9pm ET on Space.

Barry Williams (left) is standing up for nature!

Danny Bonaduce is ready for anything!

Bigfoot is on the prowl.

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Continuum Mini-Marathon Sunday July 1, 2012

Image: Cast Picture for Continuum

Suzie & I have been enjoying the Canadian futuristic science fiction series Continuum immensely since it started just over a mouth ago, and if you are late to the game they have a mini-marathon of the first five episodes coming up this holiday weekend. That makes it the selection the Paranormal Pick of the Week:

Continuum Mini-Marathon Sunday July 1, 2012
Starting at 5PM EST/PST on Showcase
Continuum Season 1 Episodes 1 - 5

This runs to and through the regular timeslot of the series, and means that we don't get a new episode this week but given that it's the Canada Day weekend I suspect many folk with be BBQing, Cottageing & such. Continuum returns with a new episode on Sunday July 7, 2012. See all of our discussions about Continuum on Hexed here.

Also Awesome This Week:
Bigfoot
starring Danny Bonaduce (The Partridge Family) and Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch) face off each other and the hunt of the legendary Bigfoot. The film is described as 'When Bigfoot attacks an 80s themed music concert, a concert promoter and a hippie burnout will do anything to protect the "endangered species."'

Bigfoot
is a SyFy Original Movie by The Asylum and will air here in Canada on Saturday June 30, 2012 at 9pm ET on Space.

Trailer Thursday: Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

Trailer Thursday Time and what better film to celebrate this week than Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter? It's based on the book by Seth Grahame-Smith and mixes history with the paranormal by making none other than Abraham Lincoln into a vampire hunter. The film is directed by the visionary Timur Bekmambetov and stars Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell, Dominic Cooper and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.

Here is the synopsis: "Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov reinvent the time-honored genre and present the terrifying creatures of the night as they were meant to be experienced -- as fierce, visceral, intense and bloodthristy. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter brings to the screen the secret life of our nation's favorite president . . . as history's greatest hunter of the undead."

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter opens in theatres on Friday June 22, 2012.

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Arachnoquake

Looking for some film fun with giant spiders *and* disasters? I know I am! And what we are talking about is the aptly named Arachnoquake! The film is directed by Griff Furst (Swamp Shark, Wolvesbayne) stars Tracey Gold (Growing Pains), Edward Furlong (Terminator 2: Judgment Day), Bud Hall and Ethan Phillips (Neelix of Star Trek: Voyager) as they face "albino spiders that go on a murderous rampage through New Orleans after being released from their ancient subterranean prison by massive earthquakes." Man that's one heck of a description. It's got me that's for sure. Should we cheer for the imprisoned spiders? One way to find out is to watch! The craziness of the film makes it a shoe in for the Paranormal Pick of the Week:

Arachnoquake
Saturday June 23, 2012 at 9pm ET on Space

Here is the film synopsis: "Another day in New Orleans at Lacross Adventures and Sightseeing turns into mayhem when an Earthquake opens fissures and golf-ball sized Albino spiders come crawling out from beneath the streets. Paul Lacrosse, his Dad Roy and his sister Petra are the only ones who realize that the Natural Shale Gas deposits that range from Louisiana all across the Southern U.S., have been exposed by the ongoing Earthquakes, and have released a fire-breathing long dormant species of spider-and these spiders are extremely aggressive. Now it's up to the Lacrosse family to pull out all of the stops, along with the National Guard, to find a weakness in this new breed of terror."

Also Awesome this Week: Camelot Re-Airing
It appears that Camelot is re-airing from the beginning starting this Tuesday June 19th, 2012 at 9PM EST on CBC with the very first episode! Shannon is pretty excited about this one as she was able to get all but the final episode of the series and felt totally let down to miss out on the very end. Suzie enjoyed it when it aired last year, so maybe in a few months we can actually talk about it! See when we've discussed the series Camelot so far here.

Trailer Thursday: Lovely Molly

Trailer Thursday Time and on the viewing menu this week is the horror film Lovely Molly. I'm not 100% sure if it's paranormal, but it feels like it's a strong possibility. The film is directed by Eduardo Sánchez who brought us The Blair Witch Projected and starts Gretchen Lodge, Johnny Lewis and Alexandra Holden.

Please note there is harsh language & disturbing content in this trailer.

Here is the synopsis: "When newlywed Molly Reynolds returns to her long-abandoned family home, reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. A malevolent force, whether her own haunted past or some supernatural ‘thing,’ tirelessly seeks to overwhelm her. Alone and isolated in a centuries-old manor, she soon begins an inexorable descent into depravity. Somewhere in the house, in the terrible space between psychosis and possession, lies an evil that will pull Molly and all those around her into darkness and death."

Lovely Molly opens in theatres on Friday June 1, 2012.

Trailer Thursday: Chernobyl Diaries

Trailer Thursday Time! Up this week, and originally shared with us by Suzie (good eye Suzie!), the Oren Peli film Chernobyl Diaries. Extreme tourism with a found footage feel and honestly, this one looks pretty scary and very thrilling/fun. The film is directed by Bradley Parker and stars Jonathan Sadowski, Devin Kelley, Jesse McCartney, Olivia Dudley, Nathan Phillips, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Dimitri Diatchenko.

Here is the synopsis: "Chernobyl Diaries is an original story from Oren Peli, who first terrified audiences with his groundbreaking thriller, Paranormal Activity. The film follows a group of six young tourists who, looking to go off the beaten path, hire an "extreme tour" guide. Ignoring warnings, he takes them into the city of Pripyat, the former home to the workers of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor, but a deserted town since the disaster more than 25 years ago. After a brief exploration of the abandoned city, however, the group soon finds themselves stranded, only to discover that they are not alone..."

Chernobyl Diaries opens in wide release on Friday May 25, 2012.
