2013 Canadian Screen Awards Winners

Over the weekend the inaugural Canadian Screen Awards were presented over three days ending off with a 2-hour broadcast on Sunday March 3, 2013. The are the new combination awards previously known separately as the Genies (for Canadian film) and Gemini's (for Canadian TV) awarded by The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television to recognize excellence in film, television and digital media productions and now are done all together.

Now the tallying has come in and the awards have been shared several of our shows have come out on top: Being Human (North American) won in the make up category, Continuum picked up visual effects award and Todd and the Book of Pure Evil won awards for both best sound and achievement in casting.

See full list of winners from the Canadian Screen Awards: Day One, Day Two and Day Three (PDF links).

2013 Canadian Screen Awards Nominations Announced

The Canadian Screen Awards Nominations were recently announced, these are the new combination awards previously known as the Genies (for Canadian film) and Gemini's (for Canadian TV) awarded by The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television to recognize excellence in film, television and digital media productions.

I was thrilled to see many of the shows we chat about here at Hexed: Sisterhood of the Supernatural were recognized including Haven, Lost Girl, Continuum, Being Human (North American), The Listener, Sanctuary, Camelot, XIII: The Series and Todd and the Book of Pure Evil. And because always point out Star Trek whenever it does (or doesn't!) pop up, I have to also cheer for William Shatner's documentary The Captains in which he chats with actors who portrayed captains in the Star Trek universe.

I'm especially happy to see the nomination for Emily Rose of Haven who is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role Haven for Audrey Parker's Day Off, I know last year we were very vocal about not seeing her in this category. Ksenia Solo also gets a big cheer for her nomination in the Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Program or Series for Lost Girl - The Girl Who Fae'd With Fire/Truth and Consequences; last year she was nominated for (and won) a Gemini for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Series in Oh Kappa My Kappa/Sorority/Fae Day.   Another happy moments is seeing the new Continuum getting lots of recognition with a whopping 5 nominations.  Congratulations to all the nominees!

Below I've listed a selection of the TV nominations for the 2013 Canadian Screen Awards, but only a selection.  Basically, if any show we talk about on Hexed was nominated, I've listed it below. I would have loved to share all the noms but it's in PDF format and 44 pages which is too much to translate!

Poll Results: Which Show are you sad to see cancelled and/or not renewed

Photobucket

Well the results are in and I'm actually quite sad at how many choice there were for Which show are you sad to see cancelled and/or not renewed? Although I'm not surprized to see one of our faves taking up the top prize for sadness with The Secret Circle at 40%. It was closely followed by and only narrowly popped ahead of Todd and the Book of Pure Evil at 33%. Then it was 3rd place tie-o-rama with Alcatraz, Ringer and Terra Nova all at 26%.

Here are the results:

40% - Secret Circle
33% - Todd and the Book of Pure Evil
26% - Tie: Alcatraz, Ringer and Terra Nova
20% - Awake
13% - Tie: The Finder and The River

If I had put this poll up this week I could have added Sanctuary as we finally got final confirmation that the show had gone from up in the air to confirmed as cancelled. I plowed through all four seasons this winter when they started airing Mon-Thurs on Space and enjoyed every minute of it. Yet again, I was late to the game!

Todd & The Book fo Pure Evil Not Returning on Space

Image: Chris Leavins as Atticus, Alex House as Todd Smith, Maggie Castle as Jenny Kolinsky, Bill Turnbull as Curtis Weaver, Melanie Leishman as Hannah B. Williams

From the Space Facebook Page on April 24, 2012:
"Todd & The Book of Pure Evil will not return for a third season on SPACE. SPACE remains very proud of this production and looks forward to building on the creative relationships developed through the series. SPACE is looking forward to additional upcoming original productions, including Primeval: New World."

Now, on first read I interpreted that as Todd and the Book of Pure Evil is done for, especially when reading elsewhere like Playback has also reported on the cancellation of Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, but a careful read actually indicated it's just not returning on SPACE. It could go somewhere else. I wonder if it will!

I really do hope Todd and the Book of Pure Evil does find a new home. It's not a show that Suzie & I regularly talk about as it's not quite to our taste as it's pretty clear they are going for a young, male audience. But I do love that it's Canadian, and the commercials always make me laugh. And I will admit that I have on occasion watched it and giggled. A lot.
