Opening Ceremonies of 2011's Hal-Con Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Comic Convention

Open Ceremonies of Hal-Con 2011 Sci-Fi Fantasy & Comic Convention

The 2011 Hal-Con Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Comic Convention began at 9:45 on a cold but beautiful Saturday morning in downtown Halifax. On November 12 to be exact. The con began with an adorable short film of a robot's origin story and his quest to find a place where he belongs.

The scene photographed of Nelson the robot waiting for the ferry to take him to Halifax had the audience fill the room with wild laughter at such a familiar experience. The humour was quite ingenious, the quality of the film fantastic and the acting quite adorable and funny. We were all thoroughly entertained right from the start.

You can tell Reg and I were absolutely entranced and super excited to be at the con. I had only been to a tiny one in Vancouver years ago. Reg used to go to Hal-Con when he was in high school and has missed them ever since.

You can watch the introductory film here. Charming, hysterical, speculative and well, we just love any story that has robots. So cool to have a Canadian robot's perspective!

The short concludes with Nelson finding "his people/robots" who take him to the con, assuring him he will feel at home there.

I told Reg that I really felt the film was quite symbolic. Always an outsider, loner, closet literary goth geek who is also a foodie... Most of my life I have wondered where my people are? Just like Nelson.

Nelson & Me at 2011 Hal-Con Sci-Fi Fantasy & Comic Convention
After a weekend at such a creative, wild, fun and friendly event, I think I found my people/robots too

It was a great start to Hal-Con and I even got to hang out with Nelson for a little while. As a former employee of Canada's Wonderland, I can officially say I have never seen a mascot character as beloved as Nelson.

He truly represented not only the spirit of Hal-Con but all the supportive, talented and slightly obsessed (in a good way) fans who are completely passionate about their particular genre of fandom. I was proud to have my photograph taken with him!

It was only just the beginning of the convention and we were already having the most amazing time! We felt completely at home.

Unofficial Blog Post about Hal-Con in Halifax, Nova Scotia Day 2

Video of us leaving to go to Hal-Con for Day 2. I apologize for the close-proximity of my face to the camera. There is only so much room in the car and after all, this is not an official blog post.

My husband Reg and I drove downtown to Hal-Con 2011 Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Comic Convention again this morning, all geared up with costumes. His was Futurama's hysterically obnoxious robot Bender and mine was rogue Goth thief Kenzi, from the TV show Lost Girl. I had been given the exciting opportunity to represent Hexed, our podcast about supernatural TV, for Hal-Con. It has to be one of the coolest events I have ever gone to.

So why do a non-official blog post? Because I just gotta talk about Hal-Con! I survived an entire weekend there, had so many adventures, have so many stories to tell I am bursting to share! But I also have to go to bed and recover (thanks fibromyalgia, you bonehead).

Bender & Me at Hal-Con 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia
When I took this photo I had not even had a chance to put on my black Kenzi wig yet!

Once we got to Hal-Con we immediately got Reg dressed up as Bender from Futurama (which had all sorts of crazy challenges, post on just the creation of Bender to come soon) and got in line for him to get his number for the costume contest.

Wardrobe Malfunction with Bender Costume at Hal-Con 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia

These were the third version of Bender's pants and they immediately disintegrated after signing up for the contest. They had to be put together with duct tape! Oh duct tape, you were our hero today.

I have now officially been introduced to the madness that is costume-making for a con. The obsession, the endless costume malfunctions and the creative problem solving. Like duct taping my husband into silver pants. I am glad I kept my costume simple because keeping up with Bender was a big job.

Crowds at Hal-Con 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Yes, a lot of my day was focused on keeping Bender on track but that is definitely part of the convention experience. I took a ton of photographs of other people's costumes too, so many fantastic outfits.

Hal-Con 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia

I am so glad we had a chance to attend Erin Gray's Q&A. I loved watching Buck Rogers growing up and her character Colonel Wilma was one of my favourites on the show. (I actually could never figure out why everyone loved Buck. To be honest, he kind of bugged me.) Erin's personal story moved and inspired me so much. I just can't wait to share more!

Hal-Con 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia

We also went to young adult paranormal fiction author Kelley Armstrong's Q&A. We got there a little early and I just had to flake out on the floor. Two full days at a convention when you have fibromyalgia is almost impossible. Somehow I made it. And I was brave and strong enough to go to the microphone and ask a question after I had a chance to sit down for a bit. Photos, videos and insights to come soon!

Costume Contest Winners at Hal-Con 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia

We of course attended the much-anticipated costume contest and stayed until the very end to hear the results! The costumes were absolutely top-notch and here you can see the Jules Verne Steampunk Association of Halifax Steam Punk winners were looked unbelievably gorgeous. More to come on what I learned about Steam Punk at the con to soon!

Hal-Con 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia

Unfortunately I missed J. G. Hertzler's talk on the main stage this morning. Unfortunately, while General Martok (OK, that is how I think of him) was being interviewed, I was attempting to keep Bender's shiny metal ass from falling apart. Thankfully I got a chance to see a bit of Hertzler's giant personality and wild character at the end of the night during the closing ceremonies. Video to come soon!

It's over??? Hal-Con 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia
It was quite clear that even though the lights came on, everyone wanted to hang out and not go home just yet

Yes, Hal-Con Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Comic Convention is officially over but the story has just begun. I will be writing about the workshops, interviews, costume contest, vendors... You name it! Officially coverage begins tomorrow morning once I feel human again. If I feel human again. I did sit next to a zombie mom and baby during a workshop about the paranormal.

Bender at Hal-Con 2011 in Halifax, Nova Scotia

What a weekend! It was one of the best of my life but this geek has got to go to bed. Real blogging begins Monday morning, fingers crossed.

Hal-Con 2011: Sneak Peek!

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Please note! Although it may appear differently, this is not yet one of my official Hal-Con 2011 post for Hexed. Got home tonight exhausted, had the most amazing first day, uploaded all sorts of cool videos and photographs and have so much to share. These are just fun and potentially silly snippets of our first day at the con. Official posts to come soon!

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

One benefit (I suppose) of living with a sleeping disorder is I was up before 6 am getting ready to pack all my camera gear, note pads, markers, i.d., changes of clothes, MP3 recorder... way ahead of time.

My husband Reg and I drove to downtown Halifax representing Hexed, the podcast about supernatural TV that my sister Shannon and I record on a weekly basis. I had gone to a con many years ago in Vancouver, British Columbia, that was quite small. Reg assured me this was going to be much, MUCH bigger.

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Nothing like a hot chocolate with a shot of hazelnut to start our day at the convention

We fortified our bodies and spirits with a preliminary trip to Starbucks in Scotia Square where we parked for the day. It was a convenient location since the convention was across the street at the World Trade and Convention Centre.

We were there from early Saturday morning until around 7:30 pm and the parking cost us $20. It was absolutely worth it. We could easily get to the car through the mall, stop for a bite to eat and pick up water, something I wish we could have purchased at the con.

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

At 9:45 on the main stage the convention began with a charming video of a lost monster robot trying to find a home, his identity, meaning... It was deeply symbolic. He found his happiness reflected in the uncanny resemblance to the Old Town Clock on Citadel Hill but then were picked up by some very cool famous friends and brought to Hal-Con. A very happy ending.

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

From there things got a tad darker but in a good way. I took this photo at one of the vendors' tables: "Die, Zombie, Die!"

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

I can not tell you how much fun it is to shop with women walking around carrying weapons and guys dressed up as Star Wars characters.

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

What would Hal-Con be without Star Trek?! This year the Kag Kanada Grand Assembly was held on the main stage and there was even bagpipe music!

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Creepy gothic artwork was everywhere... my favourite! This piece was especially freaky. Love it.

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

The amount of talented artists in attendance was downright impressive and the best part? Many created art right in front of our eyes.

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Where else can you go and see Darth Vader, Freddy Krueger and V watch a fencing demonstration by the Society for Creative Anachronism?

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia

Yup, that is right! Saturday day passes sold out. The place was absolutely packed with people having such a fun time. I have no idea how I survived the day but I got to go get some sleep so I can cover the rest of the convention tomorrow.

Hal-Con 2011, Halifax, Nova Scotia
Hanging out with a Dalek from Dr. Who

Not to worry! I will go from this Annie (Being Human)-inspired relaxed outfit to dressing up as Kenzi from Lost Girl. Can't wait to do more coverage of Hal-Con for our supernatural TV listeners dressed up as a character we adore talking about on our show. So much more to come. Seriously, I have a ton to write about and share, it's crazy and awesome!

Here is a super sneak peek of the interview with Nicholas Brendon who, of course, played Xander from Buffy answering the question: vampires or zombies? He clearly has issues with zombies. So much fun...

Good night!
