Ep 148: Paranormal TV Nov 19 - 25, 2013

On this weeks episode of Hexed, we chat about the explosive Season 2 finale of Ghost Mine, and chat up with recent episodes of Paranormal Witness, Lost Girl, Haven, Walking Dead and The Vampire Diaries.

We might be a little grumpy over some things as we acknowledge the boringness of being the season of amnesia as well as the 4th year blahs in several shows, but we do still have lively discussions on some of the newer shows as we catch up on Ravenswood, Reign and Almost Human.

We'll be back next week with Season 2 premiere of Haunted Highway, the return of Grimm and Dracula plus lots to catch up on more of our regs of Supernatural and Sleepy Hollow.

Bitten Will Premiere Saturday January 11, 2014 at 9pm ET on Space

Over the past weekend it was announced when we'll be seeing the premiere of Bitten: Saturday January 11, 2014 at 9pm ET on Space. The TV series is based on the book Bitten, from the rabidly successful Women of the Otherworld series by Kelley Armstrong.

Here is more information about what we can expected from the series and first of the 13-episode season from a press release:

"In BITTEN, werewolves are monitored by The Pack, a powerful, organized family based in the grand manor of Stonehaven, their ancestral home. In the premiere episode entitled “Summons” (Saturday, Jan. 11 at 9 p.m. ET on Space), viewers are introduced to the town of Bear Valley in upstate New York and The Pack family, to which Elena used to belong after being bitten by her boyfriend Clayton (Holt). With that one small bite, Elena was forced to live as a werewolf. Still craving the normal life she lost, Elena flees to Toronto and hides her secret from her boyfriend, Phillip (Greene). However, she is pulled back into her former world when the discovery of a mauled girl catapults an all-out war against a group of rogue Mutts (non-Pack werewolves) whose aim is to destroy The Pack."

For more information about the series premiere including character bios for Elana, Clay, Jeremy, Philip, Logan and Nick check out the full press release here.

Ep 147: Paranormal TV Nov 12 - 18, 2013 (Plus Some Catch Up)

This week on Hexed, Suzie and Shannon dive into the Season 4 Premieres of Lost Girl and Haven, continue to share thoughts on Grimm, Supernatural, The Walking Dead, Sleepy Hollow, get caught up on Ghost Mine and Dracula plus touch briefly on Almost Human.

We are also trying a new format for our discussions, starting with a brief synopsis, sharing our favourite and least favourite part of the episode and then highlighting supernatural elements. We'd love to hear your thoughts on the new format, and we have a poll up at the site where you can vote on what you'd like to hear: http://hexedpodcast.blogspot.com You can also email us at hexedpodcast@gmail.com

We'll be back next week to chat the Season 2 Finale of Ghost Mine, continue our catch up with all of our regs and maybe even get a chance to chat the mid-season finale of Ravenswood.  And although we won't likely be chatting about it, we did want to remind everyone that the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special The Day of the Doctor will be airing Saturday Nov 23, 2013 at 2:50PM on Space.

People's Choice Awards Nominations 2014

I'm excited that so many of our shows are included in this years People's Choice Awards Nominations.  You can vote now on the nominations, and the show will air on January 8, 2014.  Awards season has officially begun! Now let's take a look at the nominations that includes shows we talk about here at Hexed...

Tatiana Maslay in Orphan Black

It's not surprize to see many familiar and favourite names in Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actor and Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Actress categoriews, I can easily agree with many of the noms of Andrew Lincoln, Ian Somerhalder, Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles and Stephen Amell; and for the ladies Emilia Clarke, Ginnifer Goodwin, Kristin Kreuk, Nina Dobrev and Tatiana Maslany.  For acting chops we also have Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Joseph Morgan Favorite Actor in a New TV Series nominated for Dracula and The Originals (assumed) respectively, although I think it's a bit of a cheat to have Joseph Morgan considered he played Klaus on Vampire Diaries for several seasons.  That being said, I would still probably vote for him as his acting really is that good.

Joseph Morgan as Klaus

Chemistry is always important between characters, and in the Favorite On-Screen Chemistry the heat gets turned up with a nom of Damon & Elena - The Vampire Diaries.  And they give it up to the boys too with Favorite TV Bromance nom going to Sam, Dean & Castiel for Supernatural.  Although, does it count as a bromance, if 2 of the 3 are brothers?  I would vote form them anyway!

Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins as Dean, Sam & Cass in Supernatural

I'm sure we'll talk about if we consider Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead an antihero, as he is nominated in the Favorite TV Anti-Hero category along with Dexter Morgan - Dexter, Jaime Lannister - Game of Thrones, Norman Bates - Bates Motel and Walter White - Breaking Bad.

For shows as a whole, the ones we talk about here dominated the Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy TV Show category with nominations going to Beauty and the Beast, Once Upon A Time, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and The Walking Dead.  I wonder if one day we'll see enough of these shows that we might even get a category for horror as well, as a few of those do blur the lines of Sci-Fi/Fantasy to the beyond.

I think the Favorite New TV Drama is one that is always interesting to watch, and of the shows we talk about all of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Dracula, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, The Originals, Reign, Sleepy Hollow and The Tomorrow People were all nominated!  Last year's winner was Beauty and the Beast.  I wonder what this years will be?

Interesting to see that both American Horror Story and The White Queen are in the Favorite TV Movie/Miniseries (along with Sharknado).  I wonder where the line between a regular show, and a miniseries is?

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Ghost Mine Season 2 Finale

Season 2 of Ghost Mine yielded twice the episodes of Season 1 but it still came to an end way to quickly, and this week we'll be seeing the 12th and final episode of Season 2. I can't think of a better choice for this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week:

Ghost Mine ~ Season 2 Finale
Wednesday November 20, 2013 at 10pm on Space

It's be an extremely active season of Ghost Mine and from shadow figures to Tesla coils to even practical jokes!  I have enjoyed every minute of it. I can't wait to see how the season wraps up and I hope everyone is safe and sound, and makes some good money for this years efforts, and continued amazing paranormal findings.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Also Awesome:
  • Ravenswood Mid-Season Finale Tuesday November 19, 2013 on M3. I have to say, it feels a bit weird to ramp-up for a mid-season finale for a show that only has 10 episodes, but I feel like this means this episode will be super-crazy. After the mid-season finale, Ravenswood will return on January 7, 2014.
  • The Day of the Doctor - Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special , Saturday November 23, 2013 at 2:50PM ET on Space. I know many people are super excited for this special, and if you want to see it on the big screen you can! The Day of the Doctor will also screen in 3D in Theatres on Saturday November 23, 2013 and again on Monday November 25, 2013. For ticket information, chick here.
Almost Human Series Premiere ~ Sunday Nov 17, 2013 (And Continues Monday Nov 18, 2013)
It's hard to believe we still have new shows popping in November! Doing some research today I noticed that the new series Almost Human which starts tonight, Sunday November 17, 2013 at 8pm ET/PT on Global, will regularly air on Mondays at 8pm - and in fact tomorrow is a new episode! That's right. Tonight is the series premiere, and tomorrow is episode 2 and from there it will air Monday Nights at 8pm.
Remember to set your PVRs, Tivo's or sit down and watch it - for two nights in a row!
Almost Human ~ Series Premiere
Premiere: Sunday November 17, 2013 at 8pm ET/PT on Global
Regular Night: Mondays at 8pm starting on Monday November 18, 2013
Need a reminder on what Almost Human is all about? Here is a Series Description:
"In this action-adventure series from executive producers J.J. Abrams (Lost) and J.H. Wyman (Fringe) set in 2048, a cop teams up with a second-hand synthetic android to fight a strain of urban crime that has evolved in even more frightening ways. Detective John Kennex (Karl Urban, The Bourne Supremacy) survived a catastrophic attack on the city's police department that cost him his friends, one of his limbs and his reputation. When he returns a year later, he finds the transition difficult. Not only does one of the surviving detectives, Richard Paul (Michael Irby, Flight Plan) blame him for the lethal ambush, but department policy now requires that every cop be paired with a highly-evolved human-like android partner. Instead, Kennex works with lab technician Rudy Lom (MacKenzie Crook, Game of Thrones) to reinstate an outdated Dorian android (Michael Ealy, The Good Wife) whose somewhat dysfunctional platform is based on a "Synthetic Soul" program, allowing it to have emotional responses. Together, the two set out to keep the city safe and uncover the criminal conspiracy that threatens to destroy their world."
Almost Human stars Karl Urban, Michael Ealy, Mackenzie Crook, Michael Irby, Minka Kelly and Lili Taylor.
Countdown to Teen Wolf Season 3 Part 2 Vlog Series
Hexed listeners will know that we are big fans of the show Teen Wolf.  Suzie and I had a blast podcasting all the way through Season 1 and Season 2 of the show in summers pasts.  This summer was a very challenging time, and we missed chatting about many of our shows including Teen Wolf.  Suzie did get to watch it, but I only saw the first 2 episodes!  Can you believe it?  I have a hard time believing it myself!
In an effort to get up to date for the shows return, I've decided to share my Season 3 experience and vlog my way through all 12 episodes from now until January 6, 2014.  Teen Wolf is always full of mystery, and a lot of the fun is trying to figure out who did what, or even at times who *is* what, and it's way more fun to do that over time and share instead of a power-through-marathon.  Feel free to play along, if you are catch up like me or even if you are already up to date, either way it can be a lot of fun.
I'll be sharing the vlog countdown on Hexed's YouTube channel, you can subscribe here.  All the videos will be in the Teen Wolf Season 3 Countdown Playlist and you can watch my introduction vlog above.
Teen Wolf Season 3 (Part 2) begins January 6, 2014.  We are still awaiting announcement for what channel it will be on here in Canada, seasons past have aired on Much Music but that now redirects to MTV.ca so it might air there.  Or who knows, the recent influx of shows Reign, Ravenswood, Supernatural, Arrow and True Blood on M3 feel like that would be a good home for it too.  I'll be sure to update you when the information of what channel it's on is confirmed.
Outlander Coming to Showcase in 2014
Sam Heughan as Jamie Fraser in Outlander, coming to Showcase in 2014
At times, I shy away from sharing info on a new series until we have know it will be airing on a Canadian broadcaster. That is exactly what happened with Outlander, whose home channel is Starz but now we know it will have it's Canadian Broadcast Premiere on Showcase in 2014 it's time to bask in the Outlander love.
If you are unfamiliar with Outlander, it's an upcoming TV series based on the time-travelling historical/adventure/romance novels by Diana Gabaldon. Much like Bitten, everyone I know who ever started the novels has been swept into the world of the book and absolutely adores them. I've been tempted to dive into this female-protagnoist time-travelling romance novels myself, and might see if I can read them before the series starts. Who those who are familiar, the protagonist Claire Randal will be played by Caitriona Balfe, and Sam Heughan will play Jamie Fraser. Outlander also stars Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish and Gary Lewis.
Here is more about the show:
"Outlander spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history and adventure in one epic tale. It follows the story of Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe; Escape Plan), a married combat nurse from 1945 who is mysteriously swept back in time to 1743, where she is immediately thrown into an unknown world where her life is threatened. When she is forced to marry Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan; Batman Live), a chivalrous and romantic young Scottish warrior, a passionate affair is ignited that tears Claire's heart between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. Adapted from Diana Gabaldon's international best-selling books, Outlander is executive-produced by Emmy® Award-winner Ronald D. Moore, and also stars Tobias Menzies as Frank Randall/Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, Graham McTavish as Dougal MacKenzie, Gary Lewis as Colum MacKenzie, Lotte Verbeek as Geillis Duncan, Duncan Lacroix as Murtagh FitzGibbons Fraser, Annette Badland as Mrs. FitzGibbons and Stephen Walters as Angus Mhor."
Outlander has a 16-episodes order. See more at Outlander website, Wikipedia page and for the image happy folks check out their Instagram stream.
Hal-Con 2013 Auction with Garrett Wang
Hal-Con 2013 Auction with Garrett Wang
Last year I totally fell in love with the auction experience at Hal-Con. I had no idea that the experience could be improved... Until Garrett Wang (Harry Kim from Voyager) took over as auctioneer and blew my mind.
In this video you will see photo highlights and Khan fighting to win the set of Terry Brooks books. Garrett Wang was absolutely entertaining and fun, not to mention, an excellent auctioneer.
Hal-Con 2013 Auction with Garrett Wang
There were many treasures being sold this year! The Tauntaun sleeping bag and the Wookie coat were hard not to bid on but the prices were quite high. Everything went to charity though and people were very generous.
Hal-Con 2013 Auction with Garrett Wang
This was the item I almost could not hold myself back from, a Firefly Jayne t-shirt! But I was good.
Hal-Con 2013 Auction with Garrett Wang
I loved getting to see all the artistry people put into their items, it was amazing and the creative possibilities were endless.
Hal-Con 2013 Auction with Garrett Wang
I absolutely have to crochet a Star Trek insignia scarf now! It looked great on Garrett Wang who modelled it for the potential bidders.
Hal-Con 2013 Auction with Garrett Wang
I am happy to report that Khan won the autographed Terry Brooks books and...
Hal-Con 2013 Auction with Garrett Wang
Got them personalized by Terry Brooks himself! One of Khan/Reg's fantasy fiction heroes. Happy Birthday Reg!
Hal-Con 2013 Auction with Garrett Wang
This year at Hal-Con Garrett Wang was the man! We saw him just walking around in the upstairs vendors' room and yelled "Khan!" as soon as he saw Reg. At the closing ceremonies he popped up on stage to spontaneously thank everyone and in the Hal-Con Facebook Group there is a big rally to make sure he comes back next year. I really hope he does! He fits right in.
Supernatural Discussion Group at Hal-Con 2013
Supernatural Discussion Group at Hal-Con 2013
On Sunday I barely made it in to the Supernatural Discussion Group at Hal-Con. It was absolutely packed with people! Major Supernatural fans with lots of uber love going on for the show.
Supernatural Discussion Group at Hal-Con 2013
In fact, I found it more of a love fest than a discussion group. As someone who has watched Supernatural from the beginning, I am a huge fan. It is one of my favourite shows of all time but it is far from perfect. No, this get together was more about sharing what you love about the show.
I wanted to ask why witches were portrayed so badly? Why is the show now overwhelmed with angels and Christianity? How about the negative portrayal of women and the fact that they never fair well on the show?
Supernatural Discussion Group at Hal-Con 2013
LOVE that people dressed up as Cass! This guy was awesome!
What happened instead was a lot of discussion and theories being thrown out about is god going to show up? What about their biological brother in hell? Is Chuck god? I suddenly started to freak out. I personally did not want to discuss these ideas because I may figure it out and this is one of the few shows I want to unfold for me, not unravel all the mysteries.
Supernatural Discussion Group at Hal-Con 2013
OMG, look at the halo above his head! LOL
There were a few great lines people threw around, such as, that when it comes to angels Cass is a Turducken. Someone also shouted out, "Angels are dicks!"
Supernatural Discussion Group at Hal-Con 2013
A highlight for me was a woman dressed as Meg (from season 1) sat down right next to me. She looked so much like her! She shared with me that at Supernatural Cons (OMG, there is such a thing?) that you buy a ticket for a particular seat so it is guaranteed to be there for you and you can come and go as you please. Yes please!
It was wonderful people around other Supernatural fans. The ones in this group love the show and especially adore Charlie, who I am personally not a fan of (although I adore Felicia Day). I did appreciate that no one was allowed to talk about the last two episodes of the show just in case it might spoil it for others which was very thoughtful.
It was lovely to bask in love of the show. It did make me realize though that I prefer looking at it critically with Shannon on Hexed. That is our personal style of discussion so I just kept my mouth shut and hung out with some serious cool people.
J August Richards' Q&A at Hal-Con 2013
J. August Richards' Q&A at Hal-Con 2013
I could have listen to J August Richards' (Gunn from Angel) Q&A at Hal-Con 2013 all night. He was so personable, genuine and fun, an absolute delight to video and the biggest honour to meet in real life.
You really need to watch the video to see how awesome he is!
He shared a lot about the his auditioning process and what it was like to go in for the part of Angel and then Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. He had Meryl Streep whisper in his ear, he broke his own rules and threw himself into each part.
He could not say whether or not the character Mike Peterson will be coming back to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., especially with my camera rolling. Busted!
J. August Richards' Q&A at Hal-Con 2013
From Shakespeare readings at Joss' place to his love of karaoke, J August Richards had a ton of great stories to share. His Q&A was at the end of psycho-crazy Saturday. I was so exhausted and in so much pain (I have fibromyalgia) but during his Q&A we just sat back and listened to him with big smiles on our faces.
J. August Richards' Q&A at Hal-Con 2013
When we got our photos taken with him the next day I dared to share my story of watching the first episode of S.H.I.E.L.D. with him. I had dental surgery done earlier that day and was completely medicated while watching the show. The only moments I remembered of that first episode were his. His acting was so strong, passionate and earnest I would pop my head up and say, "Gun!" in my head. I had to rewatch the show the next day again for Hexed because everything else was a blank.
I always adored the character Gunn on Angel and hoped that the actor would live up to my expectations. No problem there, he is an even bigger sweetheart in real life. This was the biggest highlight of Hal-Con 2013 for me. My favourite moment of all.
And there were a lot of great moments! More to come...
