August 2013 Paranormal TV New and Returning Air Dates

August is a quieter month for TV in terms of new and returning titles, but don't you worry because Fall TV is not that far and from the looks of the awesome that is coming, we will need our strength!  We can gather it now as we dip into the shows to enjoy including Season 2 of Game of Thrones having it's cable broadcast premiere on Showcase, which I'm sure will be a huge hit with many readers.  I am very curious to see InnerSpace's look at this years Comic Con in San Diego, which has become *the* place to find out about everything geektastic.  If you'd rather look for little green men, check out History's broadcast of Secret Access: UFOs on the Record, which sounds pretty interesting to me.

An awesome update: 2 additional shows to add to August: Face Off Season 5 and the series debut of Heroes of Cosplay will air on Space starting Tuesday August 13, 2013.

And we have an Also Awesome this Month to share. Although it's not a new season per se, we do have the Season 2 Cable Premiere of epic series Game of Thrones:

Game of Thrones (Season 2)
Begins Fri Aug 30, 2013 at 10pm ET/7pm PT on Showcase

Here's a look into Season 2 of Game of Thrones:

"With tensions and treaties, animosity and alliances, Season 2 of Game of Thrones is a thrilling journey through a riveting, unforgettable fictional landscape based on George R.R. Martin's bestselling novel A Clash of Kings. In Kings Landing, the coveted Iron Throne is occupied by cruel young Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), counseled by his conniving mother Cersei (Lena Headey) and uncle Tyrion (Peter Dinklage), who has been appointed Hand of the King. But the Lannister hold on the Throne is under assault on many fronts. There's Robb Stark (Richard Madden), son of the slain Lord of Winterfell Ned Stark, who seeks autonomy in the north and has taken Cersei's brother Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) prisoner in battle; Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), looking to shore up her depleted power in the east through three newborn dragons; Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane), brother of the late king Robert, who rejects Joffrey's legitimacy and aligns with a powerful priestess to raise a naval attack; Stannis' brother Renly (Gethin Anthony), who has maintained his own claim since fleeing Kings Landing; and Theon Greyjoy (Alfie Allen), who was raised by the Starks, but whose blood ties in his native Iron Islands runs deep. In the meantime, a new leader is rising among the wildings outside the Wall, adding new perils for Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and the order of the Night's Watch."

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Continuum Season 2 Finale on Showcase

This week even thought we continue to wrap up some of our shows with the finales of the Continuum and Zero Hour. It's feeling like things will start to get pretty quiet on the small screen theses days, but I'm glad that we still have fun shows to enjoy. I'm a little behind the curve on Continuum so I'm planning a fun catch up week in anticipation for this weeks finale (and I'm very thankful you can watch Continuum online at the Showcase website here).

Continuum ~ Season 2 Finale
Sunday August 4, 2013 at 9pm on Showcase

We've chatted about Continuum since it's series debut last summer, and this Canadian science fiction show featuring the time traveller Keira who is stuck in current day Vancouver has been doing really well in it's second season. I can't wait to sit down and chat about it with Suzie! If you are a fan, know that even though Season 2 is wrapping up this week it's not the end. Continuum has been renewed for Season 3 so we will be seeing more.

Also Awesome
  • Zero Hour ~ Series Finale Saturday August 3, 2013 starting at 8pm EST on Global the final 2 episodes of Zero Hour will air. I've been catching this one off and on during it's burn off and it has gone into some interesting ideas and I definitely plan on watching the finale.
  • Secret Access: UFOs on the Record ~ Friday August 2, 2013 from 8 - 10pm ET/PT on History; described as "Numerous credible witnesses support some sightings of mysterious UFOs." Sounds pretty intriguing to me!

The Conjuring (Suzie's Perspective)

The Conjuring

The Conjuring is not a movie for everyone. This is not just a spooky story that will be fun to giggle at in a theatre this summer. Nor is it a typical gore-fest for fans of Saw. It is quite in between and very frightening.

I am a fan of Lorraine Warren since she used to be on the show Paranormal State. She always seemed to be a lady walking between worlds with those fabulous high collar shirts and a sensitive heart. As much as I love scary movies, discovering this one was about a case study of hers and her husband Ed, made me absolutely have to go see it.

Everything about the film feels unnervingly authentic. They worked quite hard to capture the seventies (I recognized some of the patterns in the clothing and the sheets) without making it feel dated or silly. I want those coffee mugs BTW.

The acting was excellent and the horror was... terrifying. Well, more so because every time something happened Reg would grab at me setting me off and almost sending my summer shoes flying since I jumped right into the air. I had to tell him to stop holding my hand after he involuntarily and unconsciously made me smack myself in the mouth. There was one scene he said he felt bruised from watching and I said, "I know exactly what you mean."

As I said, The Conjuring is not meant for everyone.

Me? I loved it. It was scary but there was a story and a sense of truth throughout. The depiction of Lorraine Warren did not let me down and the traumatized family was one we could empathize with quite deeply. There was some language in it I personally found spiritually offensive but the Warrens are Catholic which I will forgive them for. Overall, this is a good scary story. Period. The fact that it is based on truth events adds to its mesmerizing power. At least for me because the more believable, the more compelling.

This is a frightening tale done well. Excellent story, actors and not a "CGI-infested" horror movie. It is its authenticity that scares the hell out of us. In a good way.

Update: I sent the link to my review to Lorraine and she wrote back!

"Thank you for the kind words, Suzie.
Love & Prayers,
Lorraine"

Love that lady!

Joe Rogan Questions Everything starts tonight on Space

A new show starts on Space tonight, and it's got a title that says it all:

Joe Rogan Questions Everything
Wednesday July 24, 2013 at 9pm on Space

Series Description tells us more: "After exploring these mysteries for years on his popular podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan now takes his inquisitive nature on the road, crisscrossing America and knocking on any door necessary to uncover the truth behind “hush-hush” and bizarre beliefs that have obsessed portions of the public for generations.

In the premiere episode, “Bigfoot Human Hybrid,” (July 24 at 10 p.m. ET) Rogan’s lifelong quest to find Bigfoot sends him crashing through forests in the Pacific Northwest. As he follows the trail of evidence, he finds strange new facts at every turn. Seeking answers, Rogan speaks with eyewitnesses who claim to live with the Sasquatch, and a former military man who can decipher strange audio recordings theorized to be Bigfoot. "

Here is a bit more about the show: " In each of the six, one-hour episodes, Rogan puts his life on the line as he goes beyond the limits to uncover the truth behind the biggest myths. Mysteries and theories explored this season include the legend of Bigfoot, the afterlife, psychic soldiers, and of course, aliens. Rogan also investigates killer man-made viruses, and examines the underbelly of robot revolution and cyborgs."

I'm very curious about Joe Rogan Questions Everything, especially as he is a podcaster as well (although iTunes lists the podcast as comedy). It's so awesome to have new non-fiction paranormal shows in the summer. Bring it on!

Paranormal Pick of the Week: Being Human (UK) Series Finale

Although it's been off the schedule for a few weeks and is sneaking back in at a different time slot in a double-header for the final episodes of the season, there is no way that Being Human (UK) won't get the honour of being this weeks Paranormal Pick of the Week:

Being Human (UK) ~ Series Finale
Sunday July 28, 2013
Final 2 episodes: 9pm and 10:15pm ET on Space

We've be talking about this British series following supernatural roommates for years now, and although it's changed a lot and caused a fair amount of commotion in our reactions, there is no denying it's one of the best shows we've discussed.  It's sad to see Being Human (UK) come to an end, but at least they new it was coming which hopefully will lead us to one heck of a series finale.

Also Awesome
  • Paranormal Witness timeslot change!  The show is moving from 10pm on Wednesdays to it's new timeslot of 9pm Wednesday on Space.  Technically now awesome, but I did want to let people know, especially if it requires some changing to watching to recording habits.
  • Joe Rogan Questions Everything Series Premiere Wednesday July 24 at 10pm on Space (yes, it takes the normal timeslot of Paranormal Witness).  This non-fiction show
  • Sharktopus on Space Tuesday July 23, 2013 at 9pm ET I have to admit that it brings a warm feeling to my heart that one of my favourite shark movies will be airing on my birthday!  If you haven't seen this one before, it's well worth a watch for it's B-Movie goodness.

Paranormal Pick of the week: The Almighty Johnsons Season 3 Premiere

The Almighty Johnsons ~ Season 3 Premiere
Thursday July 4, 2013 at 10pm on Space

I am so excited that the awesome New Zealand show The Almighty Johnsons is having it's season 3 debut this week, not only in New Zealand but here in Canada as well! We absolutely love the Johnsons (well, ... except that Anders kind of drives us crazy!), but the show is clever, charming and true delight to watch.  This week we'll be getting to see it and find out what Axl, Mike, Anders, Ty, Olaf and Gaia get up to.  I hope we also get to see Zeb, Dawn, Ingrid, Michelle and Stacey as well.  I won't use any god names, just in case you haven't see the show yet, which obviously we highly recommend checking out.  Woohoo!

If you aren't familiar with the show, The Almighty Johnsons follows The Johnson family who are the reincarnation of Norse Gods.  The reinterpretation of the mythology is brilliant, the writing is fantastic and the cast is formidable.  We were quickly won over by the series when it debuted on Space last summer, and have been thrilled that they have brought us both season 2 and season 3.  Only a few more sleeps before seeing what Season 3 will bring.
