Teen Wolf: Season 1 Episode 12 (Finale)

Photobucket

Time for our final episode run down for Teen Wolf Season One, and yes it will include spoilers (see big SPOILER warning below!!) for the particular episode and the entire first season with predictions going forward. But, I don't watch trailers, teasers or read spoiler articles. All the views are entirely from the perspective of just watching the actual episode.

SPOILERS and DETAILS for TEEN WOLF, SEASON 1, EPISODE #12 BELOW

Teen Wolf Season 1

Episode #12: Code-Breaker

Focus: Lots crammed in the episode but it all comes down to everyone against The Alpha, and that really means everyone save Lydia whose in the hospital.

Title Reference: Allison's Dad finds out that Aunt Kate was responsible for the Hale House Fire, therefore she was the code-breaker. Could also refer to Allison who helps Scott. Or, could also be Derek who in the end killed The Alpha and thereby becoming An Alpha.

Characters Development:
  • Lydia was bit, but isn't turning like Scott did
  • Aunt Kate dies at the hands of Alpha Peter
  • Alpha Peter is killed by Derek, although collectively Stiles, Allison, Jackson & Scott wear him down first.
  • Alpha Peter offers Stiles 'The Bite', but he turns him down
  • Jackson asks to be bit by Derek, and looks like he goes for it
Relationships:
  • Scott & Allison get back together
  • Both Stiles & Jackson show concern for Lydia
Reveals:
  • Alpha Peter says he turned Scott to create a new pack, and that it could have just as easily been Stiles he bit
  • Derek appeared to have the strength to leave the Hale House Dungeon at anytime, but waited until he had Scott coming to him for help before releasing
General Comments:
  • I loved the opening of the episode, how there sound was drowned out and it felt very out of time and like disillusionment shattered. I actually really felt for Allison & her Dad & the fear they had of Scott.
  • I was a little peeved that Scott being bit = no plan. Perhaps I'm more fond of long arc stories, or perhaps it was a lie.
  • Did anyone believe Aunt Kate was going to talk Allison 'away'? That was not beleivable as suspicion was already cast on her at that point, I thought at least another hunter should have been with them.
  • If Scott can 'call' Derek by howling, why couldn't Peter?
  • In episode 8 Derek said says there is a potential cure for a bitten-created werewolf, by killing the one that bit them but Scott in this episode tried to stop Derek because of the cure - am I missing something there?
Lore:
  • It appears that one becomes the Alpha by killing the other Alpha.

Potential lore-ish stuff that isn't yet confirmed, explained or clear yet:
  • Alpha Peter says Lydia would turn twice a month, quick assumption is because she's a woman but I have a feeling might be another reason
  • Allison seemed to 'see' things like Lydia basking in blood - is she psychic? is it a premonition? Is her mother the same?
Arc:
  • I'm not sure how arc-y this show is, they closed out the Alpha Peter but it feels like there was more there. Kate admitted her part to the Hale House Fire, but it feels like there was more there too. It looks like it will go in the direction of folks working together (I love that idea!), as all the teens team up and I can't imagine Allison's Dad not seeing that Kate did wrong.
Predictions:
  • So many possibilities... could turn to be the teens vs Derek, or the teens and the hunters come together against the new prey.
Questions:
  • what is this bigger prey that werewolves need to fight together as a pack?
  • If Alpha Peter was doing this all for revenge, and only killing those responsible, why didn't Derek support him (Would he have killed Derek too?)
  • Was this Derek's plan all along?
  • Can their be only 1 Alpha? Anyone else feel like Highlander + Klingons?
  • What the heck did Allison's Dad say to Kate? What language was that? Their background is French - and I'm pretty sure that wasn't French.
  • What is Lydia?
  • What will become of Jackson (inferred that Derek bits him)
  • Where was the vet?
Keeping an eye on:
  • Lydia (always! That's my most consistent thing I've said about this show)
  • Derek... I might rewatch it just to see if it's possible he orchastrated everything and in the end picked Jackson over Scott because Jackson is more likely to follow and Scott continues to rebel.
Great Quotes:
  • "None of this has been easy." - Scott
  • "You are not in love. You are 16 years old. You are a child" - Derek to Scott
  • "Staying quiet is your only protection" - Allison's Mom (I don't like this quote but it felt important).
Left off at:
  • Looks like Allison's parents are contemplating leaving
  • Scott & Allison are happy
  • Kate & Alpha Peter Dead
  • Derek "is the Alpha now"
  • No one know what will become of Lydia (or Jackson)
Overall I really enjoyed the seasons, although there were lots of clunky episodes (including this one) where they tried to get too much in. It kept me guessing and on my toes for most of it, and many of the reveals were big surprizes. Stiles remains my favourite character by far, and Lydia has lots of potential. In terms of acting, I was impressed with JR Bourne (Chris/Allison's Dad) and Holland Roden (Lydia) but felt that Colton Haynes (Jackson) had the biggest and most impressive range. It's kind of strange to enjoy a show without super connecting to the main characters & their stories, but hey that's how it rolls sometimes. I hope Lydia is more prominant in season 2 and they go into pack mentatility and structures more. Overall, a great summer watch.

Feel free to contribute your predictions too, as long as they are from the perspective of just seeing this episode. Suzie & I will chat about this episode on an upcoming podcast of Hexed. Say tuned!

Teen Wolf: Season 1 Episode 11

Photobucket

We are almost at the end of Season 1 of Teen Wolf and the show, just like the summer, has gone by so fast. What craziness happened on this next-to-last episode? It's all here in another run down including predictions for the season finale. Remember, this Teen Wolf, run down will include spoilers (see big SPOILER warning below!!) for the particular episode, but only the episode noted in the post title as I don't watch trailers, teasers or read spoiler articles. Any predictions for future episodes, but all the views are entirely from the perspective of watching the actual episode and season so far.

SPOILERS and DETAILS for TEEN WOLF, SEASON 1, EPISODE 11 BELOW

Teen Wolf Season 1

Episode #11: Formalized

Focus: Scott (continues) to try to protect Allison from the Alpha even though he's banned from going to the formal.

Title Reference: There is a formal. And also could mean Allison "formally" sees Scott as the werewolf?

A little continuity, please!
  1. Before I go further I have to note a few glaring continuity issues, this is how I saw them: Scott asks, then tells, than scares Jackson into taking Allison to the formal, but Allison already told Lydia in Episode 10 that he asked her.
  2. We start with Allison upset and driving (at night), apparently after seeing Derek as the werewolf restrained by Aunt Kate. She's speeding and stopped by Stiles' Dad - who didn't we last see drinking up a storm? (could it have been an earlier night?)

Characters Development:
  • Lydia gets attacked by the Alpha (bit status unknown)
  • Derek is in capture mode for the entire episode, and an yet-unnamed hunterish guy comes in and looks like he'll be keeping him unhappy for a while
Relationships:
  • Jackson does take Allison to the formal - but to 'protect' her
  • Stiles takes Lydia to the formal (Allison convinces her)
  • Kate & Derek *were* an item
  • Scott says "I love you" to Allison
Reveals (BIG):
  • Aunt Kate & Derek had a thing back in the day! Oh my. Looks like she lured him and that had something to do with the fire, which isn't jiving with me as I thought he was a kid when it happened.
  • Allison sees Scott as a werewolf!
General Comments:
  • When Jackson broke down seeing the red eyes in the woods, and said he wanted to be one of them I almost lost it - he was so broken. Then when it turned out to be the hunters, it was even more heartbreaking. I also loved that he was concerned for his own safety at the formal, I think guys often get shoved in the 'you're a guy - you can't be scared or back down' direction and although it feels very un-heroic, it also is unusual to see.
  • Overall, lots happened but it felt pretty messy. I know we need a big set up for the finale but it's hard to forgive things like Scott not even trying to hide at the formal (why did they even make it so he couldn't go?) and other continuity guffaws.
  • I was completely surprized about the Kate/Derek reveal - I didn't see that coming, and wouldn't have believed it but when it was revealed, I did. Perfect reveal.
  • Stiles was very sweet (eventually after a few fumbles) with Lydia at the dance, it's almost like he heard the advice from Scott's Mom - he knows she's smart and told her he's liked her forever, how could that not when her over?
Lore:
  • Mountain Ash used by the vet is a repellent used to draw lines werewolves can't cross
Potential lore-ish stuff that isn't yet confirmed, explained or clear yet:
  • Nothing that I saw, but it appears the Alpha 'yell' didn't 'call' Scott, which might confuse some earlier lore.
Arc:
  • "History repeating" was a theme, it's inferred that back in the day Kate lured in Derek, a la 'girl lures werewolf and turns out she's from a family of hunters', which leads her to realize that Scott must be the Beta as he cares for Allison (as opposed to Jackson).
  • First time I've heard the term the "Hale House Fire", and technically it feels like this whole season has had connection that all come back to the fire. I think the mystery of the fire is the driving undercurrent of the season, along with the larger character arc of Scott dealing with being a werewolf.
Predictions:
  • I think the hunters are going to use Scott to get to the Alpha, and Allison may feel compelled into passive inaction for now, but in the long run, she'll help Scott & his buddies. I can't imagine her turning into one of the hunters in her family, even though she thinks Derek killed all the people.
  • I think either Lydia will survive & turn, or if she dies Stiles will become allies with the hunters.
Questions:
  • Why did Allison convince Lydia to go to the formal with Stiles, and moreover if they needed someone to go to the formal with Allison - why didn't Stiles take Allison? I love Lydia & Jackson as character, but this was clumsy way to make sure everyone was at the formal.
  • The formal scenes were pretty bad - Scott was hiding... in plain sight in the bleachers, and I'm not sure how I feel about the whole pretending to be dancing with Danny thing to freak the coach out into thinking he's coming across as homophobic.
  • Is Lydia bit? I would be rather sad if she dies. But if she turned that would be kind of cool.
  • Does Allison know that the werewolf is Derek? She only saw him wolf-ed out.
  • Why didn't Scott hear the Alpha-howl when he was with Allison? Isn't that 'a call' of sorts?
  • What was Alpha Peter doing at the formal? Trying to find someone to tell him where Derek was? That feels pretty far fetched.
  • Who was the guy who came in to see Derek?
  • Is what Kate doing against hunter rules, and if so what (if anything) would happen if it's revealed. Also sounds like he was concerned about if he had told anyone about them being together.
  • Why did Lydia want to go find Jackson? That was pretty random but served moving plot forward moment.
Keeping an eye on:
  • The vet - he seemed surprizingly comfortable talking down Alpha Peter.
  • Scott's Mom - great episode for her, first the really emotional, hilarious, embarrassing phone message and then great advice to Scott about women liking words as she fixed Scott's pants for the formal.
Great Quotes:
  • "Shapeshifter, lycan, werewolf... I don't care. It's just another dumb animal to me" - Kate
  • "Women love words" - Scott's Mom
  • "What if I get hurt?" - Jackson
  • "I'm also pretty sure I'm the only one who knows how smart you really are" - Stiles to Lydia
Left off at (2 biggies):
  • Stiles reveals to Alpha Peter that Derek has Scott's phone therefore the GPS can be used to locate him. Stiles does this under duress and with a promise from Peter that he won't kill Lydia.
  • Corralled by 2 hunter cars, Scott leaps and transforms into a werewolf in front of Allison - and for a moment it looks like he thinks she was in on it.
Next week is the season finale! Will Derek be saved? Will Allison hate Scott? Will everyone survive? Will anyone survive? So far the one thing everyone seems to agree about is that it will be a cliff hanger (poll is at 100%!), and with it being picked up for Season 2 I can't imagine them not cliff hanger-ing it. I do hope we get some closure and more reveals before they leave us hanging until next summer.

Feel free to contribute your predictions too, as long as they are from the perspective of just seeing this episode. Suzie & I will chat about this episode on an upcoming podcast of Hexed. Say tuned!

26th Gemini Award Nominees!

The 26th Gemini Awards Nominations have been announced and I'm really excited that many of the shows that Suzie & I talk about here at Hexed: Sisterhood of the Supernatural are up for awards! For anyone unfamiliar with the Gemini's there are the Canadian TV awards, or more formally "The Gemini Awards honour the best in Canadian television as determined by members of the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television and other industry professionals". I love FAQ pages. The qualifying period is between May 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011 and for series' 50% of the series must first broadcast at that time.

So, back to the shows. Looking at TV shows that Suzie & I talk about here at Hexed so that means shows of a paranormal persuasion with some scifi and crime sneaking in. Leading the way for our faves is Lost Girl & Being Human (North American) with 5 nominations each! I'm particularly excited about Lost Girl as we have been huge supporters of the show since it's very first episode, especially Ksenia Solo who plays Kenzi and she has her very own nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Series in Oh Kappa My Kappa/Sorority/Fae Day. Lost Girl is also up for Best Writing in a Dramatic Series, Best Photography in a Dramatic Program or Series, Best Achievement in Casting (Vexed) and Best Cross-Platform Project - Fiction (Digital Media). It's exciting times for Lost Girl, after the recent news of Season 2 going to 22 episodes, being at ComicCon and a strong presence at the upcoming FanExpo, they are going to be busy, busy faes!

Being Human (North American) is also up for 5 nominations including genre traditional nods for Best Achievement in Make-Up and Best Visual Effects, plus Best Direction in a Dramatic Series and Best Picture Editing in a Dramatic Program or Series. But I think the biggest and bloody nod goes to Sam Witwer who plays Aidan and is up for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role for the episode I Want You Back (From the Dead). He's up against some very impressive competition: Enrico Colantoni for Flashpoint, Hugh Dillion for Durham Country, Callum Keith Rennie for Shattered and Michael Riley for Being Erica. Wow. That is an impressive group of talented actors.

From the happy to the not so, I'm a little saddened and shocked to see one of our most beloved shows, Haven, is only up for 1 nomination: Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Supporting Role in a Dramatic Series - John Dunsworth as Dave Teagues in Spiral/Ball and Chain. It's a well deserved nomination, especially as his performance in Spiral truly is amazing and he has of the best moments of the season but I really would have loved to see more acknowledgements here. Specifically for the brilliant writing on the show which obvious has a long term plan and also for performance by Emily Rose as the series lead character Audrey.

Looking through the nominations I spotted several of the series we've talked about on occasion here at Hexed, including the sadly-cancelled Endgame with an impressive 5 nominations (seriously... that show was awesome. And why no nomination for Shawn Doyle? He's fantastic!), 3 nominations for The Listener & Sanctuary and 2 nominations for Stargate Universe. Lots of sideways competition with several of the shows up for visual effects & make up which tend to be half genre shows and half period shows, like The Tudors & The Borgias alongside Being Human, Sanctuary & Stargate Universe for Visual Effects.

That's the highlights for the shows we chat about (and detailed nominations are below), but if you want to see the nominees for all 100 categories you can read all about it here (it's a PDF). The Gemini's will be unveiled over three nights: August 30 & 31 and September 7 which will have an accompanying live broadcast on CBC Television.

Teen Wolf: Season 1 Episode 10

Photobucket

Time for another episode run down for Teen Wolf, and yes it will include spoilers (see big SPOILER warning below!!) for the particular episode, but only the episode noted in the post title as I don't watch trailers, teasers or read spoiler articles. It may also include predictions for future episodes, but all the views are entirely from the perspective of watching the actual episode. Okay, let's get started!

SPOILERS and DETAILS for TEEN WOLF, SEASON 1, EPISODE #10 BELOW

Teen Wolf Season 1

Episode 10: Co-Captain

Focus: Honestly, this episode felt very unfocused. But technically it's the alpha seeming into people lives and creating havoc.

Title Reference:
Scott & Jackson are co-captains of the lacrosse team, and Scott steps in to help Jackson when Derek attacks him. There is also clearly a power reference here too, as we've been talking alphas and betas for the season, the idea of balanced power & working together is a new idea introduced. But, negative points here for the title referencing something at the *very end* of the show.

Characters Development:
Danny scores (in lacrosse) a lot, Scott happily passes to him
Alpha's name is Peter (who knew?) and says that he is killing 'those responsible'
Derek appears to be going along with the Alphas wishes
Something hinted about Stiles' family, his Dad said (I think) I miss him (?) and I miss your Mom.

Relationships:
Scott's Mom goes on a date with Peter/Alpha
Lots of cute Scott & Allison stuff, although they don't officially seem back together
Allison tells Lydia that Jackson asked her to go to the dance 'as friends'

Reveals:
The vet is in on the werewolf thing as he takes care of Scott's wounds

General Comments:
I really feel like this episode was all over the place and I have to dock it points for the super-quick-drunkness of Stiles' Dad and the title being something from the very end of the show. Looks like we do have a good sense of where it's going for the rest of the season and I like that the Alpha has revealed but not super excited about who it is. Also felt a few vampire references - Derek can't be photographed, the quip about 'inviting' Peter in, bloodlust

Lore:
Alpha can scratch people (or more likely just other werewolves) and have them see his memories
Derek can't be clearly photographed

Potential lore-ish stuff that isn't yet confirmed, explained or clear yet:
Hunters have at least 2 types of arrow heads that do stuff or possible just annoy werewolves, at least 1 really huts them

Arc:
Looks like Peter is taking revenge on those responsible for the fire

Predictions:
I'm thinking it's going to come to an Alpha vs Scott showdown, but they might have to team up to save Derek first.
I don't think it will be Jackson & Scott vs anyone, even though Scott saved Jackson.
Possibly Jackson & Stiles are long lost brothers (Jackson is adopted, remember!)

Questions:
Is Derek just going along with his uncle, or does he believe him?
Who is the woman at the hospital?
How is Peter now fine? There was a few memory montages, but I didn't piece it together concretely
What did Stiles' Dad say when drunk? It sounded like I miss him (who?) and your mom, and there was a hint there of possibly he had a brother? ZOMG - I wonder if it's Jackson.

Keeping an eye on:
Lydia - she's not had much going on for a bit and she's gotta be on the show for a reason! And totally weird that Allison took her to the woods to test the arrows

Great Quotes:
He thinks your the second beta! - Scott to Jackson
Stop hitting my jeep! -Stiles
I can run really fast now, except half the time I'm running away from people who are trying to kill me - Scott

Left off at:
The vet is tending to Scott's hunter wounds as Aunt Kate reveals the 'family secret' to Allison by showing her Derek tied up as a werewolf.

Feel free to contribute your predictions too, as long as they are from the perspective of just seeing this episode. Suzie & I will chat about this episode on an upcoming podcast of Hexed. Say tuned!
